The episode opens with an experiment that is not supposed to work. In 1920 Harvard psychologist William McDougall put Wistar rats in a water maze with a lit exit that delivered an electric shock and a dark exit that was safe, moving the lit exit around so the rats had to learn a rule rather than a direction. The first generation needed an average of 165 attempts. He bred them at random rather than selecting for intelligence, and generation two averaged 141, generation three 118, generation eight 56, generation thirty just 20. When he split the colony and deliberately bred the slowest learners together, that line improved at the same rate. In 1923 the Edinburgh geneticist F.A.E. Crew set out to expose him as sloppy and added the control group McDougall lacked; his untrained line, genetically unconnected to McDougall's rats, averaged 25 tries on day one instead of 165. W.E. Agar at Melbourne ran the same thing for twenty years on another continent and got the same answer.
The episode stacks two more cases on top. Blue tits in Southampton learned around 1920 to pierce the foil caps on doorstep milk bottles, and the trick spread across Britain by the 1940s — which observational learning explains fine, until wartime aluminium shortages replaced the caps for years, every bird that had ever done it died of old age, and the behaviour reappeared across Britain the moment foil came back. Then there are crystals: glycerol resisted crystallisation for centuries until a barrel crystallised in transit to Vienna in 1867, after which it crystallised easily everywhere, and xylitol followed the same pattern. Rupert Sheldrake's own entry point, in his Cambridge lab in 1973, was a bean plant altering its growth toward a support pole that would not be installed for another two days. His answer, written over eighteen months at an Indian monastery and published in 1981 as A New Science of Life, was that nature has memory: any self-organising system lays down a morphic field that similar systems can resonate with, and repetition strengthens it.
The reception is the middle act. In September 1981 Nature editor John Maddox devoted an editorial to calling the book the best candidate for burning in years and compared its potential for damage to Mein Kampf. Funding dried up and graduate students were steered away, but the attack made the book a bestseller. In 2008 a man rushed the stage at a Santa Fe lecture and stabbed Sheldrake in the leg, later telling police Sheldrake had been running telepathic mind-control experiments on him for five years; Sheldrake gave a talk called 'Science and Hope' days later on a walker. TED pulled his 2013 TEDx talk 'The Science Delusion' after consulting an unnamed science board, and it collected millions of views elsewhere.
Then AJ turns on his own material. The hundredth-monkey story from Lyall Watson's Lifetide is fiction dressed on real primatology, and he says so plainly. The crystal cases have a conventional explanation — seed crystals travelling on clothing, beards and shared equipment between labs — which he calls a stretch but reports as the scientific consensus. The 1984 British TV experiment, where two million viewers saw a hidden-image puzzle and untested people elsewhere solved it faster, and the London Evening Standard's finding that its crossword went 20 percent faster in the evening, he rates as interesting but contested. The rats he does not concede, noting the critics' handling-stress explanation and countering with epigenetics, discovered long after McDougall died, which does let acquired experience chemically tag DNA. His summary position: the effect may be real, the cause is unknown, and the conservation-of-energy objection sits awkwardly beside quantum entanglement.
