RSS feed (podcasting)

A podcast RSS feed is the XML file that defines a show — its metadata and an entry per episode with the audio URL — which every podcast app polls for new episodes.

Podcasting's openness is the feed: host anywhere, and any app can subscribe. Directories like Apple Podcasts index feeds rather than hosting audio.

Feed-level tags carry artwork, categories and per-episode metadata including, increasingly, transcript links.
