Subtitle timing

Subtitle timing (spotting) is deciding when each caption appears and disappears — synchronized to speech onset, respecting minimum durations, gaps and shot changes.

Professional conventions include a minimum display time (commonly around one second), a short gap between consecutive captions, and avoiding captions that straddle hard cuts. Word-level timestamps from transcription make automatic spotting close to human quality on clean speech.
