How big is a 2-hour MP3? about 115 MB at 128 kbps.
A 2-hour MP3 is about 115 MB at 128 kbps, roughly 58 MB at 64 kbps and 288 MB at 320 kbps, because size is simply bitrate times length. Any of those uploads here as one file (the limit is 10 hours or 5 GB) and is transcribed in about 4 minutes; the first 20 minutes are free and the $6 pack (500 minutes) covers all 120 with 380 left.
Size by bitrate
Work out the size in one line.
The formula
Multiply the bitrate in kbps by 0.45 to get megabytes per hour. At 128 kbps that is 57.6 MB an hour, so two hours is 115.2 MB. Your file manager may show a slightly smaller figure, because it can count a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes.
Two hours at common bitrates
At 32 kbps mono, two hours is about 29 MB. At 64 kbps it is about 58 MB, at 96 kbps about 86 MB, at 192 kbps about 173 MB and at 320 kbps about 288 MB. Variable-bitrate files land near the average of their range.
Why the size matters
Some tools cap uploads in megabytes. The OpenAI Whisper API documents 25 MB, about 26 minutes of a 128 kbps MP3. Here the cap is 5 GB, and a two-hour MP3 at any bitrate goes up whole from this page or the upload page.
Four minutes to text
Processing takes about 2 minutes per hour of audio, and bitrate does not change that. A two-hour file is ready in about four minutes, and the 2.48-hour public run on the proof page finished in 200 seconds.
Two hours, compared
What a 2-hour MP3 runs into in other places.
✗ Too big for small caps
A two-hour MP3 at an ordinary bitrate is several times larger than the cap some services set per file.
- 25 MB limits that hold under half an hour
- Five pieces cut by hand at 128 kbps
- Bitrate lowered until the voice blurs
- Each piece's clock restarting at zero
- A summary written for each fragment
- Guesswork about what size is allowed
✓ Comfortably under the line
At any bitrate, two hours of MP3 is a small fraction of the 5 GB limit and well inside the 2 GB first-upload line.
- 115 MB at 128 kbps, one upload
- Under 300 MB even at 320 kbps
- About four minutes of processing
- 120 minutes on the $6 pack
- 380 minutes left over
- One clock across both hours

FAQ
Two-hour MP3s, answered.
How long does a 2-hour MP3 take to transcribe?
About 4 minutes after it uploads. At 115 MB, the upload itself usually takes under a minute on a typical broadband connection.
What does a 2-hour MP3 cost to transcribe?
Two hours is 120 minutes, on the $6 pack (500 minutes) with 380 left, enough for three more files of the same length. The first 20 minutes of your first recording are free.
How big an MP3 can I upload?
Up to 5 GB or 10 hours. For MP3, length is always the limit you reach first: ten hours at 320 kbps is about 1.44 GB, which also sits under the 2 GB line for a first upload.
Should I compress the MP3 before uploading?
No. A two-hour file at any common bitrate is already small enough, and lowering the bitrate can blur quiet voices. Send it as it is.
What if the MP3 is longer than 10 hours?
Cut it into two files at a pause and upload both. The transcripts count time from zero, so add the first file's length to the times in the second.
Which languages and exports are available, and is my audio private?
99 languages are detected automatically, and the exports include TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. MP3s are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
