Dialogue sessions as text

A day of takes, searchable before the edit starts.

Bounce the mix

Pro Tools sessions reference audio files and playlists, so the session itself cannot be read. Select the whole timeline and use Bounce Mix, or Bounce to Disk in older versions, from the File menu. Choose WAV or MP3 in the bounce settings and upload the single file it writes.

Mono at 48 kHz

Dialogue is usually recorded at 48 kHz. A 24-bit mono bounce is about 518 MB an hour, so an 8-hour day comes to roughly 4.1 GB, under the 5 GB cap once a pack is on the account. A 16-bit mono bounce of the same day is about 2.8 GB, and an MP3 is far smaller.

A week of sessions

One 8-hour day is 480 minutes on the $6 pack. Five such days make 2,400 minutes, over the $12 pack's 2,000, so a week of recording belongs on the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes with 2,600 left, at $0.29 an audio hour.

Takes you can find by text

Chapters with timestamps mark each scene or section, and the chat finds the take where a line was read a certain way. Names, numbers and dates said in the room come back as a list, useful when a script changes during the day.

Long dialogue elsewhere

Eight hours of takes is too long for most tools and too long to log by ear.

✗ Logging takes the old way

Long days, short limits.

  • Logging every take while listening
  • Bouncing the day in short sections
  • A 25 MB cap on the Whisper API
  • Timecode notes copied by hand
  • Script changes lost between takes
  • Searching the session by waveform

✓ From one bounce

The whole day as text with timestamps.

  • WAV or MP3 bounce, uploaded whole
  • Text about 16 minutes after upload
  • A whole day in one bounce
  • A chapter at each scene change
  • Names and figures listed for you
  • $24 for a week of sessions

FAQ

Pro Tools sessions, the common questions.

How long does an 8-hour bounce take?

About 16 minutes, at around 2 minutes per audio hour. For a longer reference, a 9.31-hour file on the proof page finished in 1,033 seconds, a little over 17 minutes.

What does a recording day cost?

Your opening 20 minutes are free. An 8-hour day uses 480 of the $6 pack's 500 minutes. A five-day week of 2,400 minutes goes on the $24 pack of 5,000, and a studio recording every week can use the $19/month Workspace.

My bounce is 4 GB. Will it upload?

Yes, after a pack is on the account: files up to 2 GB upload first, and a file up to 5 GB starts once you have a pack. A 16-bit or MP3 bounce brings the size down if you need it under 2 GB.

My session day ran past 10 hours. How should I bounce it?

Bounce it in two halves, each under 10 hours, using a timeline selection. Each half is transcribed with its own timestamps.

Can the dialogue be in other languages?

Yes, 99 languages are detected automatically. A Japanese or Korean session needs no setting, and a session that mixes languages is transcribed on its main one.

Which exports and what privacy?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON come back from every bounce. Sessions run on our own servers and are never used to train anything.
