From the recorder to a paper edit

A body-worn recorder holds the closest copy of the voice you have, and the smallest.

Getting the files off

The Track E records to its own memory card, usually as WAV files that carry timecode. Copy them to a computer with the recorder connected or through a card reader, then drop each file here; the Tentacle app and your manual show the current transfer options for your firmware.

Sizes at each bit depth

A mono WAV at 48 kHz grows by about 518 MB an hour at 24-bit and about 691 MB at 32-bit float. Four hours at 32-bit float is near 2.8 GB, above the 2 GB a file may be before a pack, so it starts once a pack is on the account. A 16-bit copy of the same day is roughly 1.4 GB.

Timecode and timestamps

Transcript timestamps count from the start of each file, not from the timecode written into it. Note the file's start time from your editor or the recorder app; adding it to any timestamp lands you on the same moment in the synced picture.

From WAV to selects

Each file returns with a brief of the main points, chapters with timestamps, key quotes and the names, dates and numbers mentioned. The subject is named in the summary, quotes and chapters, so selects for a paper edit can be marked before anyone opens the timeline.

Lav audio elsewhere

Hours of clean body-worn audio still sit unread until someone types them up.

✗ What usually happens

The audio is excellent; the workflow around it is slow.

  • Upload caps far below a shoot day
  • 25 MB on the OpenAI Whisper API, a few minutes of WAV
  • High bit-depth files that some tools refuse
  • Splitting a day into hour-long pieces
  • Logging selects by ear
  • Re-syncing notes to picture by hand

✓ Here

Every WAV in, one transcript each.

  • Float or 16-bit WAV, as you copied it
  • Timestamps per file for the edit

FAQ

Tentacle Track E audio, the practical questions.

How long do 4 hours of Track E audio take?

About 8 minutes in total, since an hour of audio takes around 2. Several files from the same day go up as separate jobs, each finishing in a few minutes.

What do a production's interviews cost?

A single 4-hour day uses 240 minutes of the $6 pack of 500. Twenty hours across a production come to 1,200 minutes, which fits the $12 pack of 2,000; sixty hours, 3,600 minutes, need the $24 pack of 5,000. A first visit adds 20 free minutes.

Can I upload a 32-bit float file?

Yes, as long as it is within 5 GB, and within 2 GB before your first pack. If a long file is over 2 GB and you want to try it first, export a 16-bit copy, which reads identically.

Should I join the files from one day?

Not unless you want one document. Each file gets its own transcript and clock, which usually suits a shoot where every file is a separate setup or interview.

Does the subject have to speak English?

No. Any of 99 languages is detected from the speech, and a subject who moves between two of them is transcribed on the main one.

Which formats come back from a Track E file, and who hears the audio?

Every WAV returns TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Files are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training, and deleting one removes its transcript.
