Transcribe a long VOC file Sound Blaster voices.
A long VOC file is usually uncompressed 8-bit mono, about 29 MB per hour at 8 kHz and 79 MB per hour at 22 kHz, so up to 10 hours fits one file well inside 2 GB. If the upload refuses the format, convert it to MP3 with ffmpeg or VLC; it transcribes at about 2 minutes per audio hour, the first 20 minutes are free, and a 6-hour session goes on the $6 pack of 500 minutes.
VOC, worked out
Creative Voice was how a 1990s PC learned to talk. Some of those PCs recorded hours of real people.
Where VOC files come from
Creative Labs introduced the Creative Voice format with the Sound Blaster card, and DOS-era software used it for speech: games, multimedia CD-ROMs, voice-mail and dictation programs, and the recording tools bundled with the card. Long VOC files usually turn up on old office PCs and floppy or CD backups: meetings, dictation and interviews recorded straight to disk.
Raw samples, simple maths
Most VOC files hold unsigned 8-bit PCM. At 8 kHz mono that is 8,000 bytes a second, about 29 MB an hour; at 11 kHz about 40 MB; at 22 kHz about 79 MB. Ten hours at 22 kHz is about 794 MB: above the 500 MB this box takes, so it continues on the upload page, and well under the 2 GB allowed before a pack.
Getting it accepted
Try the VOC as it is. If the upload refuses it, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC; ffmpeg reads Creative Voice files, and sox does too. A 48 kbps mono MP3 brings a 22 kHz hour down from 79 MB to about 22 MB, and the voice loses nothing the original held.
From disk image to document
Each recording comes back with a brief, chapters at every change of subject, the names, figures and dates said, the questions it answers, and a chat over the text. People speaking are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.
Why VOC recordings never got typed
They were recorded to be played back on one machine. That machine is gone.

FAQ
Long VOC files, what people ask next.
Does the upload accept VOC files?
Sometimes; it depends on how the file was written. If the upload refuses it, convert it to MP3 with ffmpeg or VLC first, for example ffmpeg -i report.voc -b:a 64k report.mp3, and upload the MP3.
How long will a long VOC take?
About 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 6-hour session is ready in around 12 minutes. A 794 MB file at 22 kHz takes longer to upload than to transcribe on most connections.
What does a box of old recordings cost?
Twenty-five dictation sessions of 40 minutes come to 1,000 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000. A single 6-hour session is 360 minutes on the $6 pack of 500, with 140 minutes to spare.
How big is a VOC per hour?
Uncompressed 8-bit mono is about 29 MB at 8 kHz, 40 MB at 11 kHz and 79 MB at 22 kHz. A rare 16-bit stereo file at 44.1 kHz is about 635 MB an hour, so ten of those hours would need a pack on the account first.
My recording is split into many small VOC files.
Join them in order with ffmpeg or sox into one file of 10 hours or less, and you get one transcript with chapters. Uploading them separately also works and gives one transcript each.
