How it works

From your recorder to a document.

Three steps, all in the browser.

1

Get the file off the device

Phone voice memo apps usually save M4A or MP3: share the file to your computer, or upload straight from your phone's browser. Most digital recorders show up as a drive when you connect them by USB.

2

Upload it

WhipScribe accepts MP3, MP4, M4A, WAV, WebM, FLAC, OGG and MOV. It does not accept DSS or DS2 files, so if your recorder saves in those formats, use the recorder's own software to export the dictation as MP3 or WAV first.

3

Download text or Word

Read the transcript in your browser, then export TXT to paste into an email or DOCX to finish the document in Word.

Better results

Dictation habits that transcribe cleanly.

Clear audio does most of the work.

Keep the microphone close

Hold the phone or recorder a hand's width from your mouth and keep it steady. Distance and rustling cost more accuracy than accent or speed.

Pick a quiet room

Traffic, fans and a television in the background all end up competing with your voice. A closed door makes a real difference.

One recording per document

A separate file for each letter, report or chapter keeps your library tidy and lets you export each one on its own.

Finish in the document

Export DOCX and do the final polish in Word: headings, formatting and any names or terms that need checking.

Who dictates

Dictation, typed up for you.

For anyone who thinks faster out loud than at a keyboard.

Letters and reports

Talk through a first draft on the move, then tidy the DOCX at your desk.

Field notes and site visits

Record observations as you go and get searchable notes back, with timestamps if you want to recheck what you said.

Writers

Dictate scenes, outlines or chapters while walking, and edit the text later like any other draft.

Notes after a meeting

Say the key points into your phone straight after a meeting, before the details fade, and file the text in your library.

Pricing

Record with your phone's voice memo app, then upload the file on this page, from the phone's browser or from a computer. You can preview with no signup; a pack from $4 opens the full transcript.

Can I transcribe files from a digital voice recorder?

Yes, if the file is MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, WebM, MP4 or MOV. If your recorder uses its own format, export or convert the recording to MP3 or WAV in the recorder's software, then upload that.
