What is the cheapest way to transcribe many hours of audio?

Buy the largest pack you will use. On WhipScribe the $24 pack is 5,000 minutes, about 83 hours, which works out to roughly 29 cents per hour, and credits never expire. Smaller packs start at $4 for 500 minutes. If you transcribe hundreds of hours every month, Workspace is $19/month with a 700-hour fair-use limit.

The packs

$4 / 500 minutes, $8 / 1,000 minutes, $12 / 2,000 minutes, $24 / 5,000 minutes. They are one-time purchases, not subscriptions, with no seat fee.

Per hour of audio that is about 48 cents on the $4 pack and about 29 cents on the $24 pack.

Credits never expire

Minutes you do not use stay on the account. Buying the bigger pack for a backlog costs nothing extra if the work takes months.

When Workspace is cheaper

Workspace is $19/month with a fair-use limit of 700 hours per month. It costs less than packs once you transcribe more than about 66 hours a month (the hours a $19 spend buys on the $24 pack).

How to do it

  1. Add up the hours you need to transcribe.
  2. Under about 66 hours a month, buy the pack that covers them; the $24 pack (5,000 minutes) is the lowest price per hour.
  3. Above that, or for a steady monthly load, use Workspace at $19/month.
  4. Upload files, paste links or import a Google Drive folder.
