Fade in / fade out
A fade gradually raises audio from silence (fade-in) or lowers it to silence (fade-out), replacing abrupt starts and stops.
Beyond aesthetics, fades prevent the clicks caused by starting playback mid-waveform. Standard practice puts at least a short fade on every clip boundary.
