Question · MiniDisc

Can I transcribe a MiniDisc recording? Yes, once it is a file.

Yes, once the recording is a file on your computer: play the MiniDisc into the computer's audio input or a USB audio interface and save it as MP3 or WAV, or, on some Hi-MD models, transfer it over USB with the maker's software, then upload, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

MiniDisc to text

Two ways off the disc, then one upload.

Record it in real time

Connect the MiniDisc player's line or headphone output to the computer's line input or a USB audio interface, start a recorder program, and press play. It runs in real time, so a long disc takes as long as it plays. Set the player's volume moderately to avoid distortion.

Transfer, where your unit allows

Some later Hi-MD recorders could send their own microphone recordings to a computer over USB with the maker's software, and community tools exist for some models. Whether that works depends on the unit and software version; the real-time route always works.

Lecture and interview discs

MiniDisc was a favourite for recording lectures, interviews and meetings, often in long-play modes. Each disc usually holds tracks; join them into one file per disc if you want one transcript, or upload track by track. Big WAV files go through the upload page.

What comes back

Timestamped text, chapters at each new topic, a brief with the thesis and takeaways, and the names, numbers and dates said. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and the chat finds a remark when you remember only roughly what it was.

Before and after

A case of discs, or a folder of transcripts.

✗ Discs without a player

MiniDiscs from field work or lectures sit in a case, readable only on a device few people still own.

  • One player left, battery dead
  • Track titles never entered
  • Long-play discs hours deep
  • No search for a phrase
  • Notes from the time incomplete
  • Discs that may not last forever

✓ Every disc as text

Digitise once and the content is readable on anything.

  • One MP3 or WAV per disc
  • About 2 minutes per audio hour
  • Chapters for each topic
  • Names and dates listed
  • Speakers named in the summary
  • DOCX, TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON

Sample output

A lecture from a MiniDisc.

Invented lines for illustration only; not a real recording.

FAQ

MiniDisc recordings, answered.

How much fits on a MiniDisc?

A standard disc holds about 74 or 80 minutes in normal stereo, roughly double in LP2 and four times in LP4. Hi-MD discs hold much more. What counts for transcription is the length of the file you upload.

What does a case of discs cost?

Fifteen discs of 80 minutes each is 1,200 minutes, which fits the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. A single LP4 disc of up to about 320 minutes fits the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. Packs are paid once and never expire.

Should I keep the tracks separate?

Keep them separate if each track is a different lecture or interview. Join them into one file if they are pieces of a single session, so the timestamps run through from start to end and the chapters cover the whole session rather than each fragment.

The recording has some noise and dropouts.

Speech over steady background noise usually transcribes well. A dropout leaves a gap in the text at the same time; check those spots against the audio.

Can I upload ATRAC files directly?

Convert them to MP3 or WAV first. If the transfer software can export to a common format, use that option; otherwise record the playback as described above. Either way, keep the converted file as your archive copy, since a MiniDisc player may not be around next time.

Is the recording private?

Your disc recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and each one can be deleted from your Library along with its transcript.
