Converting AMR the simple way

AMR is a phone-call codec. MP3 just makes it readable by more tools.

Where AMR files come from

Android call recorders, older phone voice recorders and some messaging apps save speech as AMR, sometimes inside a .3gp file. A phone left recording through a long call, a meeting or a lecture produces an AMR of several hours that is still tiny.

ffmpeg in one line

ffmpeg -i call.amr -ar 16000 -b:a 32k call.mp3 resamples to 16 kHz and writes a 32 kbps MP3, about 14 MB an hour. The same command reads a .3gp: swap the input name. Ten hours of AMR converts in well under a minute on most computers.

VLC or Audacity

In VLC, Media, then Convert/Save, add the file, choose an MP3 audio profile and a destination. Audacity can import AMR when its FFmpeg support is installed, then export as MP3. Menu names differ between versions, so look for Convert or Export if yours differs.

Upload and read

Drop the MP3 above or go through the upload page. Back come a transcript with timestamps, a brief, chapters, the names and numbers spoken and a chat. Converting does not add quality the AMR never had; it only makes the file easier to open.

AMR recordings, before and after

The file is small. The trouble is that few tools open it.

✗ Stuck as AMR

A call recording that only the phone can play.

  • A player that shows unsupported format
  • A .3gp that looks like video
  • Hours of calls never written down
  • Scrubbing for a date or number
  • Notes rebuilt from memory
  • Recordings piling up on the phone

✓ Converted and transcribed

The same call, as text you can search.

  • MP3 at about 14 MB an hour
  • Converted in under a minute
  • About 10 minutes for 5 hours
  • Names, numbers and dates pulled out
  • Packs from $4 for 300 minutes
  • TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON

FAQ

AMR to MP3, answered.

Do I need to convert AMR at all?

Try the AMR as it is first; most files upload as they are, up to 10 hours or 5 GB. If the upload refuses it, which can happen because browsers do not always recognise AMR, convert it to MP3 and send that copy.

Will the MP3 sound better?

No. Narrowband AMR keeps telephone-band speech only, and converting cannot bring back what was dropped. A bitrate of 32 kbps is enough to hold everything the AMR had; higher only makes the file bigger.

How big are long AMR files?

Narrowband AMR at 12.2 kbps is about 5.5 MB an hour, wideband up to about 11 MB. Ten hours is under 110 MB either way, so size is never the issue; the 10-hour limit per file is.

What does a month of recorded calls cost?

A single 5-hour recording is 300 minutes of the $4 pack. The opening minutes are a free preview.

Is it fine to record calls?

Record only with the consent the law where you and the other person are requires. This page covers converting and transcribing the file you already have.

Languages, exports and privacy?
