DS2 files, converted

DS2 is built to keep dictation small on the device. Most everyday tools cannot open it.

What records DS2

Digital dictation recorders and dictation apps from the established professional dictation makers use DS2, the successor to DSS. Doctors, lawyers, insurers and researchers dictate on them all day, and a meeting left recording on one can run for hours.

Why it needs converting

DS2 uses compression modes that general players and browsers do not read, and many DS2 files are encrypted on the recorder. A web upload therefore usually refuses a DS2 as it is. Converting to MP3 or WAV makes it an ordinary audio file.

The dependable route

Install the dictation software made for the recorder, import the DS2, and look for Convert, Export or Save As with MP3 or WAV; some versions only offer it with a full licence. If the file is encrypted, enter its password there first. Third-party converters that list DS2 also work, though encrypted files will not open in them.

Send the MP3

Upload the MP3 in the box above, or through the upload page for files over 500 MB. The transcript returns with timestamps, a brief, chapters and the names, numbers and dates dictated, ready to export as DOCX for the typing pool.

Dictation without the typing queue

A day of dictation can wait days for typing. The transcript can be ready the same hour.

✗ Leaving it as DS2

A dictation format kept as it is stays locked inside one program.

  • Files only one program can open
  • Encrypted recordings no one can play
  • Uploads refused on sight
  • Dictation queued for typing
  • Long meetings left on the recorder
  • No search across a month of notes

✓ Converted to MP3

Ordinary audio, ready for any upload and any player.

  • Opens in any player or browser
  • About 29 MB an hour at 64 kbps
  • A 6-hour session in about 12 minutes
  • DOCX export for editing
  • Names, numbers and dates pulled out
  • Packs from $4 for 300 minutes

FAQ

DS2 to MP3, answered.

Can I upload the DS2 without converting it?

Usually not: DS2 is not a format browsers recognise, so expect the upload to refuse it, and convert to MP3 or WAV first. The older DSS format is read by more tools, including ffmpeg in most builds, but DS2 generally is not.

The DS2 is encrypted. What now?

Encrypted DS2 files can only be opened with the password set on the recorder, in the dictation software. Open it there, then export to MP3. A converter without the password cannot read it.

How big is an hour of DS2?

Dictation modes are small, often in the range of 6 to 13 MB an hour depending on the quality setting. As 64 kbps MP3 the same hour is about 29 MB, still far below the 5 GB per file. The 10-hour limit is the one a long session could meet.

What does a month of dictation cost?

Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. The opening minutes are a free preview.

Is this a certified or official transcript?

No. It is an AI transcript to work from, not a certified record and not legal or medical advice. Medical dictation is suitable for training and drafting only; have it checked before it goes into any record.

Languages, exports and privacy?

99 languages are detected automatically. Exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
