How do I transcribe a long recording on a Chromebook? In the browser you already use.
On a Chromebook, open whipscribe.com in Chrome and either choose the recording in the Files picker or paste its Google Drive share link; one file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, up to 2 GB before the first pack, and it is transcribed at about 2 minutes per audio hour. A 3-hour seminar is 180 minutes, done in about 6 minutes, with the first 20 minutes free and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covering the rest.
Built for a light laptop
Little storage, school Wi-Fi, a long recording: it still works.
Local files through Files
The upload box opens the ChromeOS Files picker. Screen captures land in Downloads unless you changed the folder, as WebM video; voice recorder apps and downloads usually give M4A or MP3. All of them upload as they are, no conversion step.
Drive files without the upload
Many Chromebook users keep recordings in Google Drive rather than on the disk. Share the file so anyone with the link can view it and paste the link; we fetch it directly, which spares a slow network and a nearly full drive. A Drive folder link works for several files at once.
Google Meet recordings
A class or meeting recorded in Google Meet is saved to the organizer's Drive, in a Meet Recordings folder. If you are the organizer, share that file and paste the link; if not, ask the organizer for a link you can open.
Notes for revision
Each recording returns with a brief, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates mentioned, and a chat to ask what was said about a topic. Speakers are named in the summary and key quotes. Long files can also begin at the upload page.
ChromeOS and long audio
Why a Chromebook needs a browser-only route.
✗ Desktop software and extensions
Transcription programs made for Windows or macOS do not install on most Chromebooks, and managed school devices often block extensions.
- Desktop installers that will not run
- Extensions blocked by the school
- Local storage too small for video
- Live captions that only work as you listen
- Long files cut at an hour
- No chapters to revise from
✓ A web page and a link
The whole job runs in one Chrome tab, on a personal or a school-managed Chromebook alike.
- Paste a Drive link, skip the upload
- 180 minutes in about 6 minutes
- The first 20 minutes free
- $6 for 500 minutes
- Speakers named in the summary
- TXT or DOCX for Google Docs

FAQ
Chromebook questions, answered.
Does it work on a school-managed Chromebook?
It runs as an ordinary website in Chrome, so it works wherever your school allows web access to whipscribe.com. Nothing is installed, and the recording goes through the normal file picker or a link.
How long will a 3-hour recording take?
About 6 minutes once it has arrived. With a Drive link there is no upload on your side at all; with a local file, the upload time depends on the network, which on a busy school connection can be the slowest part.
What does a term of recordings cost?
Your first 20 minutes are free. Two 3-hour seminars a week for four weeks is 1,440 minutes, which fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes. A smaller set under 500 minutes fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes, and the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes suits a full term. Credits never expire.
Can I open the transcript in Google Docs?
Yes. Download the DOCX and open it from Drive, or copy the TXT into a document. SRT and VTT give captions for a class video, and JSON is there for anyone building on the text.
My screen recording is very large. What are the limits?
One file can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before the first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB, and anything larger starts once a pack is on the account. A recording past 10 hours needs splitting into two files.
Who can see my recordings?
Only you, through your account Library. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete a recording and its transcript whenever you like.
