2-hour interview · about 4 min · first 20 min free

How do you turn an interview into quotes? Transcribe it all, then verify each line by its timestamp.

Transcribe the whole interview, then pull quotes from the key quotes list and check each one against the audio: one file can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB (2 GB before your first pack), and a 2-hour interview is ready in about 4 minutes, at about 2 minutes per audio hour. The first 20 minutes are free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covers four 2-hour interviews with 20 minutes left.

Recording to quotation

A quote is only as good as the check behind it.

Upload the full conversation

Do not trim it to the parts you remember; the line you need is often in the last twenty minutes. Phone voice memos, recorder files and Zoom audio all upload as they are. This page's box takes up to 500 MB, and a larger file continues on the upload page.

Start with the key quotes

Key quotes collect the sentences that carry the interview, each with the speaker named and a timestamp. That is a shortlist, not a final selection: you know the story you are writing, and the strongest line for it may be elsewhere.

Search for the line you remember

You recall the gist of what was said about the budget but not the words. Search the transcript, or ask the chat where the subject came up, and every passage that touches it is returned with its time.

Replay before you print

Play the audio at the timestamp and confirm every word, including the small ones that change meaning. Keep a quote to one continuous passage; joining two sentences from different minutes changes what was said, even when each half is accurate.

Quoting from notes

Where quotes go wrong.

✗ Quotes from a notebook

The interview ran two hours; the notes caught a fraction of it.

  • A paraphrase printed inside quotation marks
  • The perfect line half-remembered
  • An hour of scrubbing to find one sentence
  • Two answers stitched into one quote
  • The recording cut to fit a size limit
  • A correction request after publication

✓ Quotes from the transcript

Every candidate line has a timestamp you can replay.

  • About 4 minutes for 2 hours
  • A key quotes shortlist with speakers named
  • Search for any remembered phrase
  • Each quote replayed before use
  • One continuous passage per quote
  • The full recording kept on file

00:12:35 When we started, nobody believed a town this size could keep a newspaper going.
00:44:08 I'd say the turning point was the winter the mill closed. Everything changed after that.
01:06:21 No, that's not quite right. It wasn't the money, it was the time we didn't have.
01:31:47 If I did it again, I'd ask for help much earlier. That's the honest answer.
01:58:02 You can use any of that, but let me know which parts before it runs.

FAQ

Pulling quotes from interviews, answered.

Are the speakers marked in the transcript?

The summary, key quotes and chapters identify the speakers by name. Every transcript line carries a timestamp, so when you take a quote from the full text you can replay the moment and confirm the voice.

How much does an interview project cost?

Fifteen 90-minute interviews are 1,350 minutes, which the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes covers with 650 left. A single 2-hour interview fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Credits never expire, so the balance waits for the next project.

Can I correct the transcript before quoting?

Yes, and you should whenever the audio says something different. Export DOCX or TXT and edit, but quote the audio, not the transcript, when they disagree.

The interview was recorded on tape. Does that work?

After it is digitised. Play the cassette or MiniDisc into a computer or recorder, save it as MP3 or WAV, then upload. A 90-minute tape becomes one file.

The interview is in two languages. Will quotes come out right?

99 languages are detected automatically, and an interview that switches language is detected on its main one. Translate a quote yourself, or have it checked, before printing it in another language.

Is the recording kept private?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. Delete the interview and its transcript once the piece is published, if your source asked for that.
