How do you join several recordings into one file? List them in order, concatenate once.
Write the file names in order into a text file (one line each, like file 'session1.m4a') and run ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy day.m4a, which joins files of the same format in seconds; for mixed formats, line them up in Audacity and export once. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.
Joining recordings that belong together
One day, many files. Joined, they read as one document.
When joining helps
A recorder that starts a new file every couple of hours, a camcorder that splits takes, or a workshop recorded session by session all leave a day in pieces. Joined, the brief and chapters run across the whole day instead of stopping at each file.
Same format: ffmpeg concat
Create list.txt with one line per file, file 'session1.m4a', file 'session2.m4a' and so on, in the order they happened. Then ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy day.m4a. With -c copy nothing is re-encoded, which only works when every file shares the same codec and settings.
Mixed formats: Audacity or re-encode
If one file is MP3 and another WAV, import them all into Audacity, place them end to end (Tracks, Align, End to End in many versions), and export one MP3. In ffmpeg, replace -c copy with -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k to convert while joining.
Mind the limit, then upload
The joined file has to stay at 10 hours or less and under 5 GB. At 96 kbps MP3, 7.5 hours is about 324 MB, small enough for the box on this page; anything over 500 MB goes through the upload page.
Many files or one
Separate files give separate summaries. That is fine for separate topics and awkward for one event.
✗ Six files from one workshop
Each file comes back alone, and the day never reads as a whole.
- Six briefs to read and merge
- Chapters that end with each file
- A point made at 10:00 lost by 15:00
- Six downloads per export format
- Files in the wrong order
- Names repeated across six summaries
✓ One joined file
One upload, one transcript, one clock for the day.
- A brief covering every session
- Chapters across the full 7.5 hours
- A chat that searches the whole day
- One file per export format
- About 15 minutes of processing
- 250 minutes, 50 left on the $4 pack

FAQ
Joining recordings, answered.
When should I not join files?
When they are different meetings, interviews or topics. Separate files give a brief per recording, which is what you want there. The minutes used are the same either way, so join only for reading convenience.
Why does ffmpeg say the files are not compatible?
Stream copy needs every file to share the same codec, sample rate and channel count. If one differs, re-encode while joining: swap -c copy for -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k. On Windows, use straight single quotes in list.txt.
What if the joined file would be longer than 10 hours?
Keep each joined file at 10 hours or less: join the morning and the afternoon into two files instead of one. Four 2.5-hour sessions add up to exactly 10 hours, so trim any dead air at the ends before joining.
What does a month of workshops cost?
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. A single day of 450 minutes fits the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. The opening minutes are a free preview.
Are the speakers identified across sessions?
Yes, the people speaking are named in the summary, the key quotes and the chapters of the joined file, so a presenter who returns in session three is recognised there too.
Languages, exports and privacy?
99 languages are detected automatically. Exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
