Transcribe long audio on your phone from the browser you already have.
Open whipscribe.com in your phone's browser, pick a long recording from your files or paste a link, and it is transcribed at about 2 minutes per audio hour, with files up to 10 hours or 5 GB. The first 20 minutes are free; a 3-hour lecture recorded on the phone is 180 minutes and fits the $6 pack of 500.
Long recordings, from the phone
The recording is already on your phone. So is everything you need to send it.
Pick the file
Tap the box and choose the recording from your files. On an iPhone, Voice Memos saves M4A files; use Share, then Save to Files, and pick it from there. Android recorder apps vary, and most save M4A or MP3.
Or paste a link
A lecture on YouTube, a recording in Google Drive or a podcast episode does not need to be downloaded to the phone at all. Paste the link and the audio is fetched on our side, which saves your data plan.
Keep the page open while it uploads
A long file can take a while on mobile data, so use Wi-Fi if you can and leave the page open until the upload completes. After that the work happens on our servers and you can lock the phone.
Read it on the small screen
On a small screen, three hours of text is a long scroll. The brief gives the thesis and takeaways, chapters jump to each part by timestamp, and the chat answers a question about the recording in a line or two.

FAQ
Long audio on a phone, the questions.
Can I transcribe a long recording on my phone?
Yes, in the phone's browser. Open whipscribe.com, tap the upload box and pick the recording, or paste a link. Files can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and the first 20 minutes are free.
How long does it take?
About 2 minutes per audio hour once the file has uploaded, so a 3-hour lecture takes roughly 6 minutes. The upload itself depends on your connection; Wi-Fi is faster than mobile data for a big file.
What does a long phone recording cost?
A 3-hour lecture is 180 minutes, which fits the $6 pack of 500 with 320 left. A semester of lectures adds up quickly, and the $12 pack holds 2,000 minutes. Credits never expire.
My recording is in Voice Memos or a recorder app. How do I get it into the browser?
On iPhone, open the memo, tap Share, choose Save to Files, then pick it from Files in the upload box. On Android, the recorder usually saves to a folder you can browse from the file picker. Phone recordings are typically far below the 2 GB that uploads before a pack.
Do I need to keep the phone unlocked?
Only while the file uploads. Once the upload finishes, the transcription runs on our servers, and the result is waiting in your Library when you come back.
Which languages and exports, and who sees the recording?
99 languages are detected automatically. From the phone, download it as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
