Blackmagic RAW · send the audio · 10 h per file

Transcribe a long Blackmagic RAW file interviews out of the camera, into text.

A 90-minute Blackmagic RAW interview is 90 minutes of speech: it transcribes in about 3 minutes and fits the $6 pack (500 minutes), and the first 20 minutes are free. BRAW footage often runs to hundreds of gigabytes an hour, so export the sound instead; 90 minutes as an MP3 at 128 kbps is about 86 MB.

BRAW and sound

A raw cinema format is built for colour, not for sharing. The words travel separately.

Where BRAW comes from

Blackmagic RAW is the recording format of Blackmagic Design cinema cameras and some other cameras and recorders that support it. Documentary crews, corporate shoots and filmmakers use it for interviews, which is where long takes of people talking come from.

Why the video cannot go up

Even at its lighter compression settings, BRAW at 4K and above commonly runs to many tens or hundreds of gigabytes an hour. That passes the 5 GB file limit within minutes, so the transcript is made from an exported audio file, not the footage.

Exporting the audio

BRAW is opened in DaVinci Resolve and other editors that read it; general tools such as ffmpeg usually do not. In the editor, export the interview audio only, as WAV or MP3 (the exact menu varies by version). If the upload refuses the file, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC, then use the upload page. If sound was recorded on a separate recorder, upload that file instead.

Paper edit material

The transcript comes back with a brief, chapters with timestamps, key quotes, the names, dates and numbers mentioned, and a chat to find the line you remember. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and SRT and VTT line up with the timeline.

Interview footage, before

A shoot day leaves terabytes of raw files and an editor who has to watch all of it.

✗ Footage first, words later

Logging long takes by watching them is where the edit schedule slips.

  • Raw files no web tool can open
  • Drives too big to send anywhere
  • Logging interviews in real time
  • Quotes typed by hand for the paper edit
  • Takes searched by scrubbing
  • Captions rebuilt for every cut

✓ Audio out, transcript back

Export the sound once per interview and the words come back in minutes.

  • 90 minutes in about 3 minutes
  • Key quotes with timestamps
  • Chapters for the paper edit
  • SRT and VTT for the timeline
  • A chat over every take
  • Minutes kept for the next shoot

Illustrative transcript

A long documentary interview, cut from one take.

Invented for this page; not a real interview. Times follow the exported audio of one long take.

FAQ

Long BRAW interviews: questions

Can I upload a .braw file?

Not in practice. The footage is far too large and the format is read by editing software, not general tools. Export the audio as WAV or MP3; if the upload refuses a file, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC.

How big is the exported audio?

A 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo WAV is about 1 GB an hour, so 90 minutes is roughly 1.56 GB: under the 2 GB line before a first pack, but over the 500 MB this box takes, so it would continue on the main upload page. As MP3 at 128 kbps the same interview is about 86 MB.

How long does it take?

About 2 minutes per audio hour, so a 90-minute interview takes around 3 minutes and a ten-hour day of takes about 20.

What does a documentary's interviews cost?

Forty hours of interviews is 2,400 minutes, past the $12 pack's 2,000, so it goes on the $24 pack (5,000 minutes) with 2,600 left for pickups. One 90-minute interview is 90 minutes on the $6 pack.

Several cameras recorded the same interview.

Transcribe one audio source, ideally the dedicated recorder or the best microphone. Uploading the same take twice uses minutes twice.

Languages, exports and privacy?

99 languages, detected automatically, with English terms inside other languages handled. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
