MXF · broadcast footage · upload the audio export

Transcribe a long MXF file without uploading the footage.

A long MXF from a broadcast camera is transcribed through its audio: export one mixed audio file and a 9-hour shoot day comes back in about 18 minutes. Broadcast MXF passes the 5 GB limit within minutes of footage, so the audio export is the file to send, up to 10 hours each, with the first 20 minutes free.

Camera originals are not upload files

Hours of broadcast footage, reduced to the words that matter.

Why MXF is so large

MXF is the container professional camcorders and broadcast systems record to, and the video inside runs at 50 Mbps or more. That is upwards of 20 GB an hour, so a long camera original crosses the 5 GB line in well under half an hour.

Export the audio first

In your editing software, export the timeline or clip as audio only, MP3 or WAV. A long interview becomes a few hundred megabytes as MP3, or roughly 600 MB to a gigabyte per hour as WAV. A WAV of several hours may pass 2 GB; that size starts once a pack is on the account, or use MP3 instead.

Mix the channels down

Broadcast MXF often keeps each microphone on its own mono track, such as a lavalier on one and a boom on another. Export a single mix that includes every voice, otherwise the transcript only hears the track you chose. Upload the result through the upload page.

Find the soundbite

Nine hours of rushes return as chapters with timestamps, key quotes with the speaker named, and the names, numbers and dates said on camera. The timestamps let an editor jump straight to the take in the original MXF.

Before / after

Camera originals and upload boxes do not mix.

✗ Pushing raw media

Sending MXF footage straight to a transcription service rarely works.

  • A 60 GB card dump refused outright
  • Hours of upload for a few hours of talk
  • One microphone track heard, the others lost
  • Clips logged by hand while scrubbing
  • Timecode and transcript out of step
  • A per-seat plan for a one-off shoot

✓ The audio, then the text

Export a mixed audio track per day, upload it, and log the shoot from text.

  • An audio export of up to 10 hours or 5 GB per upload
  • Nine hours ready in about 18 minutes
  • Every voice heard from a single mixdown
  • Quotes with the speaker named, ready for paper edits
  • Nine hours uses 540 minutes of a $12 pack
  • SRT and VTT for subtitling the cut

FAQ

Long MXF questions.

How long does a 9-hour MXF shoot take to transcribe?

About 18 minutes for nine hours of exported audio, at around 2 minutes per audio hour. Exporting the audio from the MXF takes a few minutes in most editors.

What does a 9-hour shoot day cost?

Nine hours is 540 minutes, more than the $6 pack's 500, so it goes on the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) and leaves 1,460 minutes for the rest of the production. On a first visit, the first 20 minutes are free.

Can I upload the MXF itself?

Only if it is under 5 GB, which with broadcast video means a short clip. For anything long, export audio. If the upload refuses an MXF of any size, convert it to MP3 first.

The day ran past 10 hours. How do I split it?

Export two audio files, for example morning and afternoon, and upload each. Each transcript starts its clock at zero, so note the offset if you need to match it to camera timecode.

Which languages are supported?

99, detected automatically. Interviews in Swedish, Zulu or Korean need no setting.

What do I get back, and is unreleased footage private?

The text exports as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Audio is transcribed on our own servers and never used for training, and you can delete it once the edit is done.
