Transcribe a long Olympus DS2 file the full dictation, not a clip of it.
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. DS2 is tiny, roughly 6 to 13 MB an hour, but plenty of upload tools cannot read it, so if the upload refuses it, export it to MP3 first.
DSS Pro, explained
DS2 keeps a full working day of dictation in a few dozen megabytes. The catch is who can open it.
Where DS2 files come from
DS2, also called DSS Pro, is the format Olympus and later OM System dictation recorders write, and the format their desktop dictation software and phone dictation apps save in. Legal, medical and insurance offices use it because the recorder, the foot pedal and the typing workflow were built around it.
Size per hour, roughly
DS2 has two common modes. Standard play sits near 14 kbps, around 6 MB an hour; quality play roughly doubles that to about 13 MB. Even a ten-hour quality-play file is near 130 MB, far below the 500 MB the box on this page takes and nowhere near 2 GB.
Why the upload may say no
DS2 is a proprietary codec. General converters often do not decode it, so the reliable route is the dictation software that came with the recorder: open the file, choose an export or convert option (the menu name varies by version) and pick MP3 or WAV. If you have a copy of ffmpeg or VLC that reads your file, that works too. Then send it from the upload page.
Encrypted dictation
DS2 can be encrypted with a password set on the recorder. An encrypted file cannot be transcribed or converted by anything until it is opened with that password in the dictation software, so decrypt first, export, and then upload the plain MP3.
Dictation without a typist
A DS2 file was made to be typed by a person with a foot pedal. That queue is where the hours go.
✗ The pedal queue
Long dictation waits behind every shorter job, and a format tied to one vendor narrows who can work on it.
- Files only one program opens
- A typist booked days ahead
- Encrypted files sent back unread
- Sessions cut into short jobs
- Per-minute quotes for long tapes
- No way to search last month's notes
✓ Export, upload, read
One export from the dictation software turns the DS2 into a file anything can read, and the whole session goes up at once.
- Six hours back in about 12 minutes
- One file, one running clock
- Chapters across a long session
- Names, dates and figures listed
- A chat that finds a dictated instruction
- Minutes that keep for the next session

FAQ
Long DS2 files: questions people ask
Can I upload a DS2 file as it is?
Try it; if the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC, or export it from the Olympus or OM System dictation software, which is the most dependable converter for DS2. The words come out the same from either.
How long does a six-hour DS2 recording take?
About 12 minutes once the converted file is up, because processing runs near 2 minutes per audio hour. A public run of 9.31 hours finished in 1,033 seconds, and the timings sit on the long-files proof page.
What does a month of dictation cost?
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.
Will the export get too big to upload?
Unlikely. Speech exported to MP3 at 64 kbps is about 29 MB an hour, so ten hours is under 300 MB and fits the box on this page. A WAV export is larger; anything over 500 MB continues on the main upload page, which takes files up to 5 GB with or without a pack.
The dictation runs longer than 10 hours. What happens?
Export it as two files, split at a pause, and upload both. Each transcript starts its clock at zero, so note where the first ends if you need the full running time.
Is this a certified transcript, and is the audio kept private?
No; it is an AI transcript to work from, not a certified or official one and not legal advice. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters when a dictation includes a conversation.
