FLAC · about 300–400 MB per hour · up to 10 h or 5 GB

Transcribe a long FLAC file without converting it first.

A long FLAC file at CD quality takes roughly 300 to 400 MB per hour, so a 10-hour recording usually stays under the 5 GB limit, and it transcribes at about 2 minutes per hour of audio. The first 20 minutes are free, and a 5-hour FLAC needs the $6 pack of 500 minutes for the rest.

FLAC, worked out

Lossless audio is big. It is still well inside what one file can be here.

Size per hour

FLAC keeps every bit of the original, compressing it to roughly half the size of a WAV. Stereo at CD quality lands near 300 to 400 MB an hour, mono voice recordings closer to half that, and 24-bit high-resolution audio can pass 1 GB an hour. Know which you have before you pick the route in.

Where the two lines fall

At CD quality, ten hours of FLAC is about 3 to 4 GB, so the 10-hour line comes before the 5 GB one. High-resolution FLAC reverses that: at around 1.2 GB an hour, 5 GB arrives near the four-hour mark. A FLAC above 2 GB waits for a pack on the account before it starts.

Uploading a big lossless file

FLAC is among the formats the upload takes. The box here is sized for ordinary files, and a lossless recording in the gigabytes continues on the upload page. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first; the words come out the same.

What comes back from hours of audio

A digitised archive tape or a long session comes back with a brief that states its main points, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates that were said, and the questions it answers. Narrators and interviewees are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

Why long FLAC files get refused

A lossless hour is a dozen times what some tools accept.

✗ Size limits built for clips

One hour of CD-quality FLAC is over ten times the OpenAI Whisper API's documented 25 MB upload limit.

  • Upload caps measured in megabytes
  • Splitting the file into pieces
  • Converting before every upload
  • Timestamps that restart in every piece
  • Nothing that summarises the full tape
  • Paying per hour on a subscription

✓ One file, up to 5 GB

The FLAC goes up whole and comes back as one transcript on one timeline.

  • Up to 10 hours or 5 GB a file
  • About 2 minutes of work per hour of FLAC
  • 20 free minutes to start with
  • $12 for 2,000 minutes for an archive
  • Chapters across the full recording
  • Five export formats

FAQ

Long FLAC files, the common questions.

How long does a long FLAC file take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes of work per hour of FLAC once uploaded, so a 5-hour FLAC is ready in roughly 10 minutes and a 10-hour one in about 20. A file of several gigabytes takes longer to upload than to transcribe on most connections.

What does a 5-hour FLAC cost, and a whole archive?

Five hours is 300 minutes, inside the $6 pack (500 minutes). A 30-hour archive of digitised tapes is 1,800 minutes, which fits the $12 pack (2,000 minutes); 60 hours is 3,600 minutes and needs the $24 pack (5,000 minutes).

How large is a FLAC file per hour?

At CD quality in stereo, roughly 300 to 400 MB. Mono voice at the same settings is around half that, and 24-bit, 96 kHz stereo can reach 1.2 GB an hour or more. The upload accepts one file up to 5 GB, and 2 GB before the first pack.

My FLAC runs longer than 10 hours. What then?

Split it into two files at a natural break, for instance between tape sides, and upload each. Each part gets its own transcript and its own timestamps from zero, so note the order.

Which languages are recognised in a FLAC?

99, detected automatically, so an oral history in Tagalog, Zulu or Hebrew needs no setting. Regional Philippine languages such as Cebuano or Ilocano come back as a fast first draft, so plan one review pass. Music on the recording is not transcribed; the speech is.

What exports do I get, and what happens to the file?

A long FLAC transcript downloads in five formats: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. FLAC files are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete a file and its transcript whenever you choose.
