From the Arrangement to the page

Ableton is built for music, but plenty of talking gets recorded in it. Here is how that talking becomes text.

Export Audio/Video

In the File menu choose Export Audio/Video, set the rendered track to the main output and cover the full length of the Arrangement. WAV and AIFF are always there; recent versions also write MP3 and FLAC. A .als set file holds no audio, so upload the export, not the set.

Settings that suit speech

Speech does not need 24-bit stereo. A 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo WAV is about 635 MB an hour, so 2.5 hours lands near 1.6 GB; mono halves it, and an MP3 at 128 kbps is about 144 MB for the same session.

Clips in Session View

Recordings that live as clips in Session View only export as one timeline after they are placed in the Arrangement, or recorded into it. Check the export's length matches the whole session before you upload.

What you get back

A brief with the thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps, and the names, figures and dates that were spoken. People are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and a chat answers questions about the session.

Talk recorded in a music tool

A long spoken session in Ableton is easy to record and hard to read back.

✗ Without a transcript

The waveform shows when people spoke, never what they said.

  • Soloing tracks to find a sentence
  • Notes typed while the session ran
  • A 25 MB limit on OpenAI's Whisper API
  • Exports chopped into short parts
  • Times copied from the transport by hand
  • Sessions archived and never reread

✓ With one export here

The session reads as a document with a clock.

  • All voices from the main output
  • Text about 5 minutes after upload
  • Chapters that match the Arrangement
  • Quotes you can lift into show notes
  • One price list, credits that wait
  • Caption files for a video edit

00:01:55 Levels look fine. I will read the first chapter straight through, then we do the pickups.
00:48:20 Can we take that paragraph again? I tripped on the second name.
01:37:42 This section is new material, so I want it slower than the draft.
02:26:09 That is everything for today. Mark the last three pages for a retake.

FAQ

Ableton Live sessions, answered.

How long does a 2.5-hour export take?

About 5 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. On /proof/long-files a 9.31-hour file finished in 1,033 seconds.

What does a run of sessions cost?

Every recording starts with a free preview of its opening minutes, and a longer export is previewed before a pack transcribes the rest. One 2.5-hour session is 150 minutes. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

Should I export each track separately?

No. Export the main output so every microphone is in one file; separate track exports would each come back as a separate transcript without the conversation between them.

My export is over 5 GB. What should I change?

Lower the bit depth to 16-bit, choose mono, or export MP3. A 24-bit 48 kHz stereo WAV is about 1 GB an hour, so a long set at those settings passes 5 GB around the five-hour mark. Keep the file under 5 GB, with or without a pack.

Will music in the session be transcribed?

No. Music and sound effects are left out; the speech is transcribed. Speech over a loud bed is harder to read, so mute the music tracks in the export if the words matter most.

Which files come back, and what happens to the audio?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. The export is transcribed on our own servers and is never used for training.
