From iMovie to text

iMovie makes the long video. A share setting decides whether it uploads in one go.

Share as a file

On a Mac, iMovie's share option for a file asks for resolution and quality, then saves where you choose; the result is usually an MP4, but check the export settings in your version. The same menu offers Audio Only on recent versions, which is the smallest file of all.

Resolution decides the size

Size per hour is bitrate times 3,600 seconds. At 8 Mbps, a common rate for 1080p, that is 3.6 GB an hour, so a 3-hour ceremony is about 10.8 GB. At 2 Mbps, nearer what a 540p share uses, the same three hours are about 2.7 GB, and the voices sound exactly the same.

A lecture series, priced

Twenty recorded lectures of 75 minutes each total 1,500 minutes. That is over the $6 pack, so the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes is the right one, with 500 minutes left for the review sessions.

Captions for the family video

SRT and VTT files let you add captions to the finished event video, and the brief lists the speeches in order with chapters, so the vows or the valedictorian's speech are a click away. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training.

Long iMovie videos elsewhere

A three-hour event looks fine in iMovie and turns into a 10 GB file on the way out.

✗ Where an iMovie share goes wrong

The default share is built for a big screen, not for a transcript.

  • 1080p or 4K shares that pass 5 GB
  • Cutting the ceremony into short parts
  • Upload tools that time out at an hour
  • Captions typed from memory
  • No record of which speech came when
  • Paying for a plan to transcribe one event

✓ A lighter share

Smaller video, the same speech, one upload.

  • 720p or 540p keeps three hours small
  • A 3-hour ceremony read in about 6 minutes
  • Every speech in the chapter list
  • SRT and VTT for the finished video
  • No cost for the opening 20 minutes
  • One $6 pack for the ceremony

FAQ

Long iMovie videos: what people ask.

How long does a 3-hour iMovie video take?

About 6 minutes, because the work runs at about 2 minutes per audio hour. Even 9.31 hours finished in 1,033 seconds on the public proof page.

What does a long event or a lecture series cost?

For a first-time visitor, the first 20 minutes of the video are free. A 3-hour event is 180 minutes on the $6 pack of 500 minutes. A series of twenty 75-minute lectures is 1,500 minutes, on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.

My share is over 5 GB. Should I cut it into parts?

Share it again at a lower resolution, or as Audio Only, instead of cutting it. One file holds up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and uploads up to 2 GB work before a pack; over 2 GB starts once a pack is on the account.

Can I send it straight from iMovie on an iPhone?

Save the video to the phone first, then open whipscribe.com in the browser and upload it from Photos or Files. There is no iMovie integration; WhipScribe works on the saved file afterwards.

What if the speeches are in another language?

The language is detected on its own, across 99 languages. A ceremony that switches between two languages is detected on the main one and the switches are handled.

Which files can I download?

TXT and DOCX to read and edit, SRT and VTT for captions, and JSON for anything automated. Recordings stay on our own servers and are never used for training.
