Transcribe a long iPhone voice memo without leaving the phone.
iPhone Voice Memos saves each recording as an M4A file, small enough that even a ten-hour memo uploads as one piece. Share it to Files or AirDrop it to a Mac, upload it here, and a three-hour memo comes back in about 6 minutes, with the first 20 minutes free.
Getting the memo out
Three taps from the Voice Memos list to the upload box.
Share it to Files
In Voice Memos, open the recording's menu, choose Share, then Save to Files. Back on this page in Safari, tap the upload box, pick Browse and select the memo. Nothing has to be converted on the way.
Or move it to a Mac
AirDrop sends the memo to a nearby Mac, where it lands in Downloads. If Voice Memos syncs through iCloud, the same recording appears in the Mac's Voice Memos app and can be dragged onto the desktop, then into the box.
Small files, long hours
Voice in M4A takes about 30 to 60 MB an hour, so a whole day of recording stays far below the 2 GB that uploads before a pack. The ten-hour length limit is the only one a memo is likely to reach.
A memo you can search
An unlabelled memo called New Recording 14 becomes a document with a brief, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates said aloud, and a chat that answers questions about what was recorded.
Why long memos go unheard
Easy to record for hours. Hard to listen back to.
✗ A long memo on its own
Recording takes one tap; getting anything out of three hours of audio takes an afternoon.
- Scrubbing the waveform for one remark
- Memos named only by date and place
- Mail rejecting the attachment
- A converter app before transcription
- A transcriber that gives up after the first half hour
- Lecture notes rebuilt from memory
✓ The same memo, transcribed
One M4A in, a searchable document out. Voice Memos already saves a format that needs no preparation.
- No conversion: M4A goes up as saved
- Two minutes of processing for each hour recorded
- Chapters to jump to the right minute
- Lecturer and students named in the brief and quotes
- Up to 10 hours in a single memo
- Minutes that wait for the next memo

FAQ
Long Voice Memos, answered.
How long until my memo is transcribed?
Roughly 2 minutes for each hour of audio. A one-hour memo usually takes about 2 minutes and a three-hour one about 6, plus the upload, which is quick because M4A files are small.
What will a week of lecture memos cost?
Say five lectures of two hours each, 600 minutes in all. That is more than the $6 pack holds, so the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes fits, leaving 1,400 minutes for the following weeks. A single three-hour memo, 180 minutes, fits the $6 pack of 500.
Will a long memo be too big to upload?
Each upload may run to 10 hours or 5 GB. A Voice Memos recording reaches the ten hours long before it gets near even 1 GB, so size is rarely the issue.
My memo ran past 10 hours. Can it still go in?
Not as one file. Use Trim in Voice Memos to save the first part, duplicate the original and trim the second part, then upload both.
Can it handle a memo in another language?
Yes. 99 languages are recognised automatically. A memo in Korean, Japanese or Portuguese needs no setting, and English mixed with Tagalog is handled in one recording.
Which files can I download, and is the memo kept private?
Downloads come as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete the memo and the transcript at any time.
