Hui, whaikōrero and wānanga · te reo and English

Transcribe long recordings made on a marae the kōrero of the day, in writing.

A recording made on a marae, such as a 7-hour day of hui with whaikōrero and discussion, is transcribed at about 2 minutes per audio hour, so the day is text in roughly 14 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and a two-day hui of 7 hours each, 840 minutes, fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.

Recording on the marae

Recording follows the tikanga of the marae. Once it is agreed, the text keeps the kōrero findable.

Ask before you record

Check with the marae and the kaumātua before recording, and agree what may be recorded, what stays off the record, and who may see the transcript. Some kōrero is not for recording or sharing, and the transcript should follow the same rules as the audio.

Te reo Māori as a first draft

Te reo Māori is among the languages detected automatically, and switches between te reo and English are handled, but te reo comes out less accurately than English. Treat those passages as a fast first draft and plan one review pass by a fluent speaker, with care for macrons, names and whakataukī.

Speech in, waiata out

Whaikōrero and discussion are transcribed. Waiata, karanga and chanted karakia are not, so the text skips them and picks up when speaking resumes. Speakers are named in the summary and chapters when they are introduced.

Days and files

A long day on the paepae can be recorded as one file of up to 10 hours or 5 GB; a two-day hui goes in as one file per day. If the hui was streamed to YouTube, paste the link. This box takes files up to 500 MB, and larger ones continue on the upload page.

Why hui recordings go unheard

The whānau recorded the whole hui. Finding one speaker's words means listening to the whole day.

✗ A full day on one device

Hours of kōrero, kept on a phone or a camera card, with no way to search it.

  • Seven hours to find one speech
  • Decisions remembered differently
  • Whānau overseas who could not attend
  • No written record for the trust
  • Speakers' names lost from the recording
  • Files too long for most tools

✓ Text for the record of the hui

The day comes back as text with chapters, times and the decisions said.

  • About 14 minutes for a 7-hour day
  • First 20 minutes free
  • Chapters for each speaker and topic
  • Dates, names and figures listed
  • Speakers named in the summary and key quotes
  • DOCX and TXT for the written record

FAQ

Marae recordings, questions answered.

How long does a full day of hui take?

About 2 minutes per hour of audio. A 7-hour day is ready in around 14 minutes, and a 3-hour wānanga session in about 6.

What does a two-day hui cost?

Two 7-hour days are 840 minutes, more than the $6 pack's 500, so the $12 pack of 2,000 covers it with 1,160 left. A single 4-hour hui, 240 minutes, fits the $6 pack of 500. Prices are in US dollars.

How accurate is it in te reo Māori?

Te reo Māori is transcribed, but less accurately than English. Plan one review pass by someone fluent, especially for names, place names and whakataukī.

Are waiata and karakia included?

No. Sung and chanted parts are not transcribed; speeches and discussion are. Add a karakia from its written text if it belongs in the record.

What if the file is very large?

Each file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before a first pack, uploads up to 2 GB start immediately; a high-resolution video can be exported as audio to make it smaller.

Who has access to the recording?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. You can delete the file and transcript once you have downloaded them, so the marae keeps control of its kōrero.
