Transcribe long interviews recorded with a RØDE VideoMic the sound is in the camera file.
A 90-minute interview recorded with a RØDE VideoMic is back as text in about 3 minutes once you upload the camera's video file or an audio export of it, up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file. The first 20 minutes are free; one interview uses 90 of the $6 pack's 500 minutes, and a documentary of twelve 90-minute interviews, 1,080 minutes, fits the $12 pack of 2,000.
From the camera, not the mic
A VideoMic records into the camera. The interview lives in the video file, often a very large one.
Where the interview is
Most VideoMic models send their sound to the camera through a cable, so the words sit in the camera's video file, usually MP4 or MOV depending on the camera. Copy the clip off the camera's card, then upload the clip or an audio export of it. If the edit is already on YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive, paste the link.
Camera files and the 5 GB ceiling
Video is heavy: at a common 4K bitrate of 100 Mbps, an hour is about 45 GB, far past 5 GB. Export the audio from your editor instead; a 90-minute WAV at 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo is about 1 GB and a 128 kbps MP3 about 86 MB. A low-resolution export of the video also works.
Clips split by the camera
Many cameras break a long take into several files at a size or time point; the camera manual says where. Join the clips on the editing timeline and export one audio file so the timestamps run on one clock, or upload each clip and read them in order.
What an interview gives the edit
The brief sets out the thesis and the strongest takeaways, chapters mark each subject with a timestamp you can find on the timeline, and every name, date and figure is listed for the fact-check. The interviewee is named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and SRT or VTT gives you subtitles.
Interview footage without text
Ninety minutes of a great interview, and the edit starts with a blank paper cut.

FAQ
RØDE VideoMic interviews, answered.
How long does a 90-minute VideoMic interview take?
About 3 minutes, because each audio hour takes roughly 2 to process. A full shoot day of five hours of interview takes about 10.
Should I upload the video or just the audio?
Either, within 10 hours or 5 GB per file. Camera footage often passes 5 GB, so exporting the audio is usually easier and much faster to upload. The timestamps match the footage either way.
What does a twelve-interview documentary cost?
Twelve interviews of 90 minutes are 1,080 minutes, which fit the $12 pack of 2,000 with 920 left for pickups. A single interview fits the $6 pack of 500. Before the first pack, files up to 2 GB upload.
Does WhipScribe connect to the camera or to RØDE's software?
No. No integration, plugin or bot exists for either. Copy the file off the card and upload it, or paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link.
Will the background music be transcribed?
No. Music, sound effects and crowd noise are not transcribed; the speech is. A VideoMic pointed at the subject helps keep the voice ahead of the room.
Which exports come back, and is the footage private?
The interview exports to TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Footage and audio are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
