Transcribe long sessions recorded on a Tascam DR-44WL the recorder ran all afternoon, the notes take minutes.
A 4-hour session recorded on a Tascam DR-44WL is back as text in about 8 minutes once its file is uploaded, and a single file may run to 10 hours or 5 GB. Your first 20 minutes are free; one session uses 240 of the $6 pack's 500 minutes, and twelve weekly sessions, 2,880 minutes, fit the $24 pack of 5,000.
After a long session
The DR-44WL can sit on a stand for a whole afternoon. Getting its file to us takes one step.
Wi-Fi or the cable
Tascam's app can use the recorder's Wi-Fi to start and stop takes from a phone, and the manual describes moving files that way. For a four-hour file, the USB cable or a card reader on the microSD card is usually much faster. Copy the take to the computer, then drop it here or paste a Google Drive link to it.
Which track to send
With the internal mics and the two XLR inputs in use, a take can leave more than one file. Send the one that carries the voices: the stereo mix if you made one, otherwise the pair the presenters' mics fed. A room mic alone also works, just with fainter questions from the far wall.
Long sessions and the 2 GB line
Four hours of 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo WAV is around 4.15 GB, under the 5 GB ceiling but above the 2 GB that uploads before a pack. Add a pack first, or switch the recorder to MP3 for talk-only sessions; at 128 kbps four hours is about 230 MB.
What comes back from a workshop
You get a brief with the session's main thread and takeaways, chapters that follow each exercise or agenda block, and the names, numbers and dates said aloud. Presenters are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, and the chat answers what was agreed about next week.
Long sessions the old way
Four hours of good audio, and nobody wants to be the one who writes it up.
✗ Without a transcript
The session is recorded and then forgotten.
- Four-hour WAVs too big for most upload boxes
- The wrong track sent, with only the room in it
- Notes rebuilt from memory a week later
- Exercises impossible to find again
- Phone transfers over Wi-Fi that stall
- A term of sessions with no index
✓ Sent here
The recorder's take becomes notes you can search.
- Sessions up to 10 hours or 5 GB
- Four hours processed in about 8 minutes
- Each exercise as a timed chapter
- Agreements and dates listed
- Twenty free minutes on a first visit
- Twelve sessions on the $24 pack

FAQ
Tascam DR-44WL sessions, answered.
How fast is a 4-hour DR-44WL session transcribed?
In about 8 minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per audio hour. A 90-minute rehearsal from the same recorder takes about 3.
What do twelve weekly sessions cost?
Twelve sessions of four hours are 2,880 minutes. That is more than the $12 pack of 2,000, so the $24 pack of 5,000 covers them with 2,120 minutes left. A single session fits the $6 pack of 500 with 260 to spare.
Can I send the file straight from the recorder over Wi-Fi?
There is no connection between the DR-44WL and WhipScribe. The recorder's Wi-Fi works with Tascam's own app; once the file is on your phone or computer, you upload it here like any other file.
The session ran longer than 10 hours. What then?
One file holds up to 10 hours or 5 GB, so a day that ran longer goes in as two files. Recorders often start a new file at a size point anyway, which gives you a natural place to split.
Does it cope with music between the talking?
Music, sound effects and applause are not transcribed; the speech is. A rehearsal comes back as the director's notes and the spoken lines, with the singing left out.
Which exports are there, and is the audio private?
Five formats: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete a session whenever you like.
