The drive on the shelf at home

Somebody digitised the cassettes and camcorder tapes years ago. The drive kept them. Nobody has listened since.

Copy it the way you usually do

At home, the My Cloud often shows up as a network location in Finder or File Explorer, so you can drag a recording to the desktop. Away from home, the My Cloud app or web dashboard lets you download a file instead; the menus differ by model and firmware. Either route ends with an ordinary file you can upload.

Big home videos, one file

Camcorder transfers and phone videos of a whole day can be large. One file may run up to 10 hours or 5 GB; until a pack is on the account, uploads stop at 2 GB. The box above takes 500 MB, and a larger file continues on the upload page. An audio-only copy is smaller and gives the same words.

The tapes, costed

Thirty tapes of two hours make 3,600 minutes, above the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, so the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes covers them with 1,400 minutes left. One 8-hour recording, 480 minutes, fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes with 20 to spare.

What the family gets back

Each recording returns chapters with timestamps, a brief of what was talked about, the names, places and years mentioned, and the questions it answers. People who introduce themselves are named in the summary. Export DOCX to print a booklet or TXT to keep on the drive beside the audio.

Why home archives go unheard

Every tape was saved. Nobody has the evening it takes to find grandad's story about the harbour.

✗ Saved but silent

Hours of family audio, filed by date, played never.

  • Folders called Tapes 1 to 30
  • Videos too long to sit through
  • Relatives far away who never hear them
  • Place names nobody can spell
  • One person who knows what's on which tape
  • Files too big for most upload boxes

✓ Saved and readable

Copy, upload, and print the story.

  • Eight hours back in about 16 minutes
  • Files up to 5 GB in one piece
  • Thirty tapes inside the $24 pack
  • Chapters for each conversation
  • Names, places and years listed
  • DOCX for a printed family booklet

FAQ

WD My Cloud recordings, answered.

Is there a My Cloud app for WhipScribe?

No. There is no app, plugin or connector for WD My Cloud, and nothing is installed on the drive. You copy the recording to your computer and upload it.

How long does an 8-hour recording take?

About 16 minutes after the upload, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A two-hour tape comes back in about 4.

What does the whole collection cost?

Thirty two-hour tapes, 3,600 minutes, fit the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. Ten tapes, 1,200 minutes, fit the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, and up to four tapes, 480 minutes, fit the $6 pack of 500 minutes. Credits never expire.

The recordings are old and noisy. Will they work?

Speech that you can follow when listening usually comes through. Hiss, music and background noise are not transcribed; the spoken words are. Very quiet passages may need checking against the audio.

Grandma speaks Portuguese on half the tapes. Does that matter?

99 languages are detected automatically, file by file. A tape that moves between two languages is detected on its main one, so ask a relative who speaks the other to read those passages.

Who sees our family recordings?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. Download the text, delete the uploaded copy from your Library, and the originals stay on your My Cloud.
