Memoir dictation · family interviews · about 2 min per audio hour

Transcribe recordings made in the living room and turn the sessions into a manuscript.

Memoir dictation and family interviews recorded in the living room come back as text at about 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 90-minute session is ready in roughly 3 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and a $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the rest of that session and several after it.

What the living room does to the audio

Soft chairs help. The television does not.

A kinder room than most

Sofas, curtains and rugs soak up echo, so a living room is often the cleanest place in the house to record. The trouble is everything else: a television in the next room, a dog, a clock, a grandchild with a toy. Pause the television, sit near the phone, and the speech comes through.

Dictating a memoir

A memoir dictated in hour-long sittings grows quickly. Chapters with timestamps mark each story, and the brief lists the people, places and years mentioned, so the sessions can be sorted into an outline before anyone writes a line.

Thirty sittings, priced

Thirty sessions of an hour each come to 1,800 minutes. That sits on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, which costs $0.36 an audio hour. Minutes never expire, so a project that takes a year costs the same as one that takes a month.

Ask the transcript

The chat over the transcript answers questions such as which session covered the move abroad, or what was said about the first job. It quotes the passage with its timestamp so you can go back to the audio.

Why home sessions stall elsewhere

Dictating is fast. Getting the words out is not.

✗ The usual route

Hours of sessions sit in a folder because listening back and typing takes far longer than talking.

  • Typing an hour of talk takes most of a day
  • Free tiers that stop at 30 minutes
  • Phone transcription that drops long memos
  • No chapters to find a story again
  • No record of which session held what
  • A monthly plan for a part-time project

✓ Sessions as text

One upload per sitting, and each one comes back ready to edit.

  • About 3 minutes for a 90-minute sitting
  • The first 20 minutes free
  • 2,000 minutes for $12, one-time
  • Speakers named in the summary and chapters
  • People, places and years listed
  • DOCX ready for a manuscript

FAQ

Living room recordings, the common questions

How long does a living room recording take to transcribe?

Plan on about 2 minutes per recorded hour. A 90-minute memoir session is done in about 3 minutes, and you can leave the page while it runs.

What does a memoir project cost?

One 90-minute sitting fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes after the first 20 minutes free. A project of thirty one-hour sittings, 1,800 minutes, goes on the $12 pack of 2,000. All prices are in US dollars and there is no subscription.

How large can a home recording be?

A single file is accepted up to 10 hours long or 5 GB in size, whichever is reached first. Until a first pack is bought, uploads go up to 2 GB, and a heavier file starts once a pack is on the account. An audio recording of a single sitting is almost always far smaller than that.

Does a long sitting need splitting?

Only if it runs past 10 hours, which a sitting at home never does. Keep each session as one file so its chapters and timestamps line up with the recording.

Can the storyteller speak a language other than English?

Yes. 99 languages are detected automatically, including Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Swedish and Tagalog. A session is detected on its main language, and English with Tagalog switching in one recording is handled.

Which exports can I use, and is it private?

TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, all from one run, with DOCX the easiest to edit into a manuscript. Home recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
