NB-Whisper Norwegian

What it is

The National Library of Norway's AI Lab has open-sourced NB-Whisper, a family of Whisper checkpoints fine-tuned on Norwegian audio across Bokmål and Nynorsk. The release ships under permissive licenses and is widely used by Norwegian broadcasters, public-sector projects, and accessibility programmes that need stronger Norwegian accuracy than stock multilingual Whisper offers. Best fit when the buyer is norwegian bokmål and nynorsk transcription where stock whisper is not accurate enough. The honest caveat: research-grade releases; commercial deployment is integrator's responsibility. As with any open-weights release, the integrator owns hosting, scaling, and SLA — but the licensing cost is zero and the model can be fine-tuned on in-house audio.
