OBS MKV · up to 10 h · no remux

Transcribe a long OBS recording straight from the MKV.

OBS saves long recordings as MKV by default, and that file uploads here as it is, with no remux. One recording can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and a six-hour session is usually transcribed in about twelve minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and a pack from $6 transcribes the rest.

Long OBS sessions

You pressed Stop Recording. The rest is one upload.

MKV goes up as it is

OBS defaults to MKV because a crash cannot ruin it, and there is no need to remux it to MP4 for us. Find it with File, Show Recordings. The box here takes the usual sizes, and a multi-gigabyte recording continues on the upload page, up to 5 GB.

When the video is over 5 GB

A long 1080p capture can pass 5 GB on picture alone, while the speech in it is only tens of megabytes an hour. Save the audio as MP3 with VLC or a single ffmpeg command and upload that. A recording over 10 hours goes in as two files.

Check which track has your voice

Only the first audio track is transcribed. If you split the microphone and the desktop audio onto separate tracks, make sure your voice is on track 1 in Advanced Audio Properties, or the transcript will follow the game instead.

A six-hour stream you can search

Chapters with timestamps split the session into its segments, and the brief, quotes and the names and numbers you said make the VOD description and the highlight list easier to write. SRT and VTT put captions back on the video.

The long capture

Six hours of OBS footage, and you need one sentence from it.

✗ Footage only

The recording is on disk. Finding a moment means scrubbing a six-hour file in a player that struggles with it, and writing the VOD timestamps by hand takes longer than the edit.

  • Scrubbing a six-hour MKV for one remark
  • Remuxing because a tool refuses MKV
  • Video too large for the upload form
  • The game's audio transcribed instead of your voice
  • VOD descriptions written from memory
  • No captions on hours of content

✓ Footage plus text

The MKV comes back as a transcript with chapters, ready to quote, caption and describe.

  • The MKV uploaded straight from the recordings folder
  • Audio-only MP3 when the video passes 5 GB
  • Your microphone on track 1, transcribed
  • Chapters to turn into VOD timestamps
  • Captions for the whole session
  • Searchable text across every stream

00:05:12 Okay, we are live and recording. Today is the full build from an empty project, start to finish.
01:38:44 The reason the shader looks wrong is the colour space, not the lighting. Watch what happens when I switch it.
03:57:20 Somebody in chat asked about the export settings, so I will go through them properly now.
05:46:09 That is the build done. I will put the project files and the timestamps in the description tonight.

FAQ

Long OBS recordings, answered.

Do I need to remux my MKV to MP4 first?

No. MKV uploads as it is, and so do MP4, MOV, FLV and TS. Remuxing is only worth doing if you need the MP4 for an editor.

How long does a 6-hour OBS recording take?

Around twelve minutes, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A three-hour session takes about six, and a full ten-hour marathon about twenty.

What does a 6-hour stream cost?

Six hours is 360 minutes, which fits inside the $6 pack (500 minutes). A month of streams at 40 hours is 2,400 minutes, which is more than the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) holds, so that month goes on the $24 pack (5,000 minutes). Whatever is left over keeps for later, since credits do not expire.

My recording is 9 GB. What can I do?

The limit is 5 GB per file and 10 hours. Save only the audio with ffmpeg -i recording.mkv -vn audio.mp3, or with VLC's Convert option, and upload the MP3, which will be a small fraction of the size.

I recorded with several audio tracks. Which is transcribed?

Only the first one. Put your microphone on track 1, or export the track with your voice as its own audio file and upload that.

Will it handle my language, and how do I export?

Whatever language you stream in is detected on its own from 99 languages, so bilingual streams need no setup. The transcript exports as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
