How do you convert DSS to MP3? Dictation software, or one ffmpeg line.
Open the DSS in the dictation program that came with the recorder and use its convert or export option to save MP3 or WAV, or run ffmpeg -i note.dss -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 64k note.mp3, which reads standard DSS in most builds (encrypted files and the newer DS2 need the maker's software). A 4-hour session is then about 115 MB and transcribes in about 8 minutes on the $4 pack of 300 minutes.
DSS, converted
DSS keeps hours of voice tiny on a pocket recorder. Converting it is quick when you need to.
What records DSS
Digital Speech Standard comes from professional dictation recorders made for doctors, lawyers, insurers and journalists. The format is designed for speech at very low bit rates, so a recorder can hold days of dictation, and a meeting or interview left running on one easily becomes a multi-hour file.
Two ways to convert
In the desktop dictation software from the recorder's maker, import the file and look for Convert, Export or Save As with MP3 or WAV; names and options change between versions. Without that software, a current ffmpeg reads standard DSS. To convert a folder at once on Mac or Linux: for f in *.dss; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 64k "${f%.dss}.mp3"; done.
When you need not convert
Try the upload first: a DSS file often goes through as it is, up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Convert only if the upload refuses it, or if you want an MP3 that any player opens. Use files you recorded or have the right to use. Anything over the 500 MB this box takes continues on the upload page, though DSS and its MP3 rarely get near that.
After the upload
The transcript comes back with timestamps, a brief, chapters, and the names, numbers and dates dictated, so file references and figures are easy to check. Export DOCX for the document or TXT for a case system.

FAQ
DSS to MP3: answers
Do I have to convert DSS before uploading?
Not always. Try the DSS first; many upload as they are. If the upload refuses it, convert to MP3 with the dictation software or ffmpeg, or to MP4 with VLC if your build reads the file.
ffmpeg says it cannot read my file.
It may be DSS Pro (a .ds2 file), encrypted, or a variant your ffmpeg build lacks. Open it in the dictation software from the recorder's maker, enter the password if one was set, and export MP3 or WAV there.
How big is DSS compared with MP3?
Standard DSS is often in the range of 6 to 15 MB an hour depending on the recording mode. As a 64 kbps MP3 the same hour is about 29 MB, so a 4-hour session is about 115 MB. A higher MP3 bit rate does not add detail the DSS never had.
What does a project's recordings cost?
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. One 4-hour session is 240 minutes of the $4 pack. Every recording starts with a free preview of its opening minutes; a longer file is previewed and a pack transcribes the rest.
Is the transcript certified?
No. It is an AI transcript to work from, not a certified transcript and not legal advice. Medical dictation is for training only; anything that goes into a record needs a qualified check.
Languages, exports and privacy?
99 languages are detected automatically. Exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT, JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
