Do transcription credits expire? No, your minutes stay.
No: WhipScribe packs are one-time purchases and the minutes never expire, so 500 minutes bought for $6 today are still on your account next year, and no subscription renews in the background. The packs are $6 for 500 minutes, $12 for 2,000 and $24 for 5,000; minutes come off by audio length, processing takes about 2 minutes per audio hour, one file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and the first 20 minutes are free.
How the minutes work
Buy once, use whenever the recordings come.
Three packs, one rule
Pick the pack that matches what you record: 500 minutes, 2,000 minutes or 5,000 minutes, for $6, $12 or $24. Whatever you do not use stays put, with no monthly reset and no deadline to spend it.
Minutes follow the audio
A 90-minute recording uses 90 minutes, whether it is an MP3 or a 2 GB video. Processing speed has nothing to do with the count: an hour takes about 2 minutes to transcribe and costs 60 minutes of credit.
Irregular recording, fixed cost
Students, researchers and event organisers record in bursts: a heavy month, then nothing. Credits that never expire suit that pattern, because quiet months cost nothing. Upload from this page or the upload page whenever the next file arrives.
When a subscription makes sense
A $19/month Workspace exists for a team that records every week and wants shared space. For anyone recording now and then, the one-time packs are the simpler choice.
Expiring versus permanent
Why expiring credits cost more than their price.
✗ Credits on a clock
Monthly allowances and expiring balances reward recording on a schedule, not recording when you need to.
- Allowances that reset every month
- Unused hours lost at renewal
- Subscriptions forgotten for months
- Rushing files through before a deadline
- Plans priced for heavy months
- Cancelling to stop the charges
✓ Credits that wait
Minutes are bought once and spent whenever a recording turns up.
- One-time packs from $6
- No expiry date on any minute
- No renewal to cancel
- Minutes counted by audio length
- The first 20 minutes free
- Top up only when you run low

FAQ
Credits and expiry, answered.
Do unused minutes roll over?
There is nothing to roll over, because minutes are not tied to a month. They stay on the account until you use them, so a pack bought before a long break is still there when you come back, next month or next year.
Which pack should I buy?
Add up the audio you expect to transcribe. Up to 500 minutes, about 8 hours, the $6 pack is enough. Up to 2,000 minutes, about 33 hours, take the $12 pack. Beyond that, the $24 pack holds 5,000 minutes, about 83 hours.
How long does a pack last in practice?
A podcaster publishing four 90-minute episodes a month uses 360 minutes, so the $24 pack covers nearly 14 months of episodes. A student recording 2,000 minutes over a year can buy the $12 pack once and be done.
Is there a subscription I have to cancel?
No. Packs are one-time purchases, paid by card at checkout, with nothing renewing. The only monthly option is the Workspace, and only a team that chooses it pays monthly.
What if a recording is longer than my balance?
Check your balance against the recording's length before you start, and add a pack if it falls short. A single file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB; before your first pack, uploads can be up to 2 GB.
What do the minutes buy?
A full transcript with timestamps, a brief with thesis and takeaways, chapters, the names, numbers and dates mentioned, a chat over the recording, and exports in TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, across 99 languages detected automatically. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
