Zoom MP4 → M4A · or the audio file Zoom kept

How do you extract audio from a Zoom MP4? Often Zoom already did it for you.

Look in the meeting's recording folder first: Zoom local recordings usually include an audio-only M4A next to the MP4, and cloud recordings often offer an audio-only download. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

From Zoom recording to transcript

The audio you need is often already sitting in the folder.

Check the folder

Local recordings land by default in a Zoom folder under Documents on most computers, one subfolder per meeting, and many settings save an audio-only .m4a alongside the .mp4. Cloud recordings usually list an audio-only file among the downloads. File names and defaults vary with the Zoom version and your account settings.

Or copy it out of the MP4

ffmpeg -i zoom_0.mp4 -vn -c:a copy meeting.m4a lifts the AAC track out unchanged in seconds. In VLC, Media, then Convert/Save with an audio profile gives an MP3 instead, which takes longer because VLC re-encodes.

Or skip extraction

A Zoom MP4 is an ordinary MP4 and uploads as it is, up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Extraction is only worth it when the MP4 is large, for example a long meeting with screen sharing in high resolution, or when you want a file that is quick to move.

What comes back

A transcript with timestamps, a brief with decisions and takeaways, chapters, the names, numbers and dates said and a chat over the meeting. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Files over 500 MB continue on the upload page.

Meeting recordings, before and after

No bot joins the call; this works on the recording afterwards.

✗ Rewatching the meeting

A long Zoom recording is easy to save and hard to use.

  • Three hours to rewatch for one decision
  • An MP4 bloated by screen sharing
  • Notes taken by whoever had time
  • Action items scattered in chat
  • No timestamps to send a colleague
  • Meeting minutes written from memory

✓ Reading the meeting

The audio goes in once, and the meeting comes back organised.

  • A brief with decisions and takeaways
  • Chapters by agenda item
  • Names, numbers and dates pulled out
  • A chat to ask what was agreed
  • About 6 minutes for 3 hours
  • Packs from $4 for 300 minutes

FAQ

Zoom audio, answered.

Do I need to extract the audio at all?

No. The MP4 uploads as it is, up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and most Zoom recordings are well under that. Extract only when the file is large or your connection is slow; the transcript is the same either way.

Where does Zoom put local recordings?

By default, a Zoom folder inside Documents on Windows and macOS, with a folder per meeting named by date and title. The path can be changed in Zoom's recording settings, so check there if it is not in the usual place.

Is recording the meeting allowed?

Record only with the consent the law where you and the participants are requires; Zoom shows a recording notice, but that may not be enough everywhere. This page covers the file once you have it.

What does a month of meetings cost?

Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. A team with twenty such meetings a month uses 1,800 minutes, covered by the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. The opening minutes are a free preview.

Are the participants named?

The people speaking are identified and named in the summary, the key quotes and the chapters, which is usually where you look for who committed to what.

Languages, exports and privacy?

99 languages are detected automatically, including a meeting that switches to another language. Exports: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
