How long can a Zoom recording be? and how much of it can be transcribed.
A Zoom recording can last as long as the meeting itself, which Zoom limits by plan, and as long as there is room to store it: local recordings stop only when your disk fills, cloud recordings when the account's storage does. Whatever Zoom saved, WhipScribe transcribes one file up to 10 hours or 5 GB at about 2 minutes per audio hour. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.
The limits, both sides
What decides a Zoom recording's length, and what we accept.
Zoom's side: the plan
Zoom caps meeting length by plan: free accounts have had a short per-meeting limit, while paid plans allow meetings that run for many hours. Zoom changes these terms from time to time, so check its current plan page; the recording simply ends when the meeting does.
Zoom's side: storage
A local recording is written to your computer and keeps going while there is free disk space. A cloud recording counts against the storage on your Zoom account, and admins may set it to be deleted after a period, so download the long ones you care about.
Our side: 10 hours or 5 GB
One file up to 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first. The box here takes 500 MB; a larger Zoom MP4 continues on the upload page. Uploads up to 5 GB are accepted with or without a pack, and a bigger file can be split or sent as audio.
The audio file is enough
Zoom can usually save an audio-only M4A next to the MP4. It is a small fraction of the video's size and holds everything needed for the transcript, so a recording too big for the 2 GB line often fits once you upload the audio instead.
Long Zoom calls
A long Zoom meeting outgrows most transcription tools.
✗ What tends to break
Common snags with recordings measured in hours.
- Upload caps of a few hundred megabytes
- Tools that stop after an hour
- A bot that had to be invited beforehand
- Cloud copies deleted before anyone reads them
- The MP4 cut into parts by hand
- A monthly plan for an occasional long call
✓ What works here
The saved file goes in as it is.
- Files up to 10 hours or 5 GB
- Audio-only M4A accepted
- Nothing joins the meeting
- About 2 minutes per audio hour
- Chapters across the whole call
- One-time packs, no renewal

FAQ
Long Zoom recordings, answered.
Is there a maximum length for a Zoom cloud recording?
Zoom's help pages tie the practical limit to the meeting length on your plan and the storage on your account rather than to a separate recording cap; check them for the current terms. Long cloud recordings can take a while to process on Zoom's side before the download appears.
How big is a long Zoom recording?
It depends on video, screen sharing and resolution, so a few hundred megabytes an hour for the MP4 is a common range, while the M4A audio is far smaller. An 8-hour MP4 can pass 2 GB; the M4A of the same meeting usually will not.
What does an all-day meeting cost?
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. A week of five such days, 2,400 minutes, needs the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes.
My recording is longer than 10 hours. What now?
Split it into two files under 10 hours each, for example at a break, and upload both. Minutes are counted on running time, so splitting costs nothing extra.
Do I need everyone's permission to record?
Recording a call needs the consent the law where you and the participants are requires; Zoom shows a recording notice, but say it aloud too. WhipScribe only sees the file you upload afterwards.
What comes back from a long Zoom call?
A brief with the thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates said, and a chat over the transcript. Participants are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, and files are transcribed on our own servers, never used for training.
