Transcribe a long Zoom cloud recording straight from the portal download.
A Zoom cloud recording that ran for hours transcribes from the file you download in the Zoom web portal: take the audio-only M4A if it is listed, or the MP4, and a 4-hour webinar comes back in about 8 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and the $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the rest of those four hours with 260 minutes left over.
From the Zoom cloud to text
The meeting is already saved in the cloud. Getting the words out of it should take one download and one upload.
Where the cloud copy lives
When a host records to the cloud, Zoom processes the meeting after it ends and lists it under Recordings in the web portal. Each entry can hold several files: a video MP4, an audio-only M4A, and sometimes a chat file or Zoom's own caption file. For a transcript, the M4A is the one to download, because it carries the same voices in a much smaller file.
Why the share link is not enough
The share link Zoom emails out opens a player page in the browser, not a plain media file, so it is not one of the link types we fetch. Download the file from the portal first and upload it here. A long gallery-view MP4 that is too big for the box on this page continues on the upload page, which takes one file up to 5 GB.
Several files for one meeting
If the host stopped the recording and started it again, the portal usually keeps a separate file for each part rather than one long one. Upload each part on its own; every transcript gets its own clock from zero, so note which part came first before you merge the notes.
What a four-hour session turns into
Four hours of webinar is roughly 35,000 words, too much to read end to end. It comes back with a brief that states the thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps, the names, numbers and dates the presenters gave, and the questions the session answered. Each presenter is identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.
Why long cloud recordings get stuck
Zoom keeps the recording for you. It does not hand you anything you can search.
✗ Left in the portal
The file sits in the cloud until someone has three free hours to watch it again.
- Scrubbing the player to find one answer
- Zoom's caption file without a summary
- Retention rules that delete old recordings
- A share link a colleague cannot quote from
- Notes typed from memory after the call
- No chapters across a four-hour agenda
✓ Downloaded once, transcribed once
The M4A goes up, and the session comes back as text you can search and cite.
- Around 2 minutes for each audio hour
- 20 free minutes to check the names
- $6 for 500 minutes, minutes never expire
- Chapters with timestamps for the agenda
- Questions from attendees pulled out
- Exports for minutes, captions and data

FAQ
Zoom cloud recordings, the common questions.
How long does a 4-hour Zoom cloud recording take to transcribe?
About 8 minutes once it has uploaded. Processing runs at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 90-minute call is ready in about 3 and a full 8-hour training day in about 16. The transcript is saved to your Library, so you can leave the page while it works.
What does a 4-hour recording cost, and what about a month of them?
Four hours is 240 minutes, which fits the $6 pack (500 minutes). A team that records 30 hours of calls in a month uses 1,800 minutes, which the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) covers. Credits never expire and no subscription is required; a $19/month Workspace exists for a team that records every week.
Should I download the M4A or the MP4 from the Zoom portal?
The M4A if the portal lists one. It holds the same audio as the MP4 at a small fraction of the size, so it uploads quickly and the transcript is identical. If the recording only shows an MP4, upload that instead.
Is there a size or length limit for a Zoom download?
One file can run up to 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first. Before a pack is on the account, uploads go up to 2 GB; a larger MP4 starts once a pack is added. A meeting that ran past 10 hours goes in as two files.
Our meetings are not in English. Does that matter?
No. The language is detected automatically from 99, including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Tagalog. A meeting that switches language partway is detected on its main language, and English with Tagalog in one recording is handled.
Can I paste the Zoom share link instead of downloading?
Not at the moment: the share link opens Zoom's player rather than a media file. Download the M4A or MP4 from the portal and upload it. Your Zoom files are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and the transcript exports to TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON.
