How long can an iPhone voice memo be? as long as storage and battery last.
Apple's Voice Memos app has no fixed length limit: a memo keeps recording until you stop it, the battery runs out or the iPhone runs short of storage, and in the default compressed setting an hour takes up only tens of megabytes. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. The opening minutes are a free preview.
Long memos
What limits a memo, and how a long one reaches us.
What actually stops a memo
Free space and charge. Before an all-day recording, plug the phone in or keep a power bank on it, clear some storage and turn on airplane or focus mode so notifications stay quiet. Apple changes iOS each year, so treat menu names on this page as a guide.
Compressed or lossless
Voice Memos has offered a compressed setting and a lossless one in its audio quality options. Compressed is plenty for speech and keeps a 10-hour memo to a few hundred megabytes; lossless can make the same memo several times larger, which slows the upload, though one file can be up to 5 GB.
Getting it off the phone
Open the memo, tap the share or more button and save it to Files, or AirDrop it to a Mac. Then open this page on the phone and pick it from Files; the box takes up to 500 MB, and a bigger memo continues on the upload page.
What comes back
A brief with the thesis and takeaways, chapters with timestamps through the whole memo, the names, numbers and dates you said, and a chat to find a moment again. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON.

FAQ
Long voice memos: the follow-ups.
How big is a long voice memo?
In the compressed setting, expect roughly 25 to 60 MB per hour depending on the iOS version and settings, so even a 10-hour memo stays well under the 2 GB line. Lossless memos are much larger; check the size in Files before you upload.
Can the memo be longer than 10 hours?
Voice Memos will keep going, but one file here is up to 10 hours or 5 GB. Trim the memo into two parts in the app (the edit or trim tool, depending on version) or on a computer, and upload both; minutes cost the same either way.
What does a term of recorded lectures cost?
Fifteen 80-minute lectures are 1,200 minutes. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.
Can I record a phone call as a voice memo?
Voice Memos records the room, not the call itself. Whatever you use, recording a call needs the consent the law where you and the other person are requires.
Do I need an app?
No. The upload works in Safari on the iPhone; pick the memo from Files. The opening minutes of your first recording are free, so a long memo shows you its first part before you buy anything.
Is the memo kept private?
Memos are transcribed on our own servers and never used for training. Many memos hold personal notes, so that matters.
