How to transcribe a long video from Dropbox get the file onto your device, then upload it whole.
To transcribe a long video from Dropbox, download it from dropbox.com or copy it out of your synced Dropbox folder and upload the file here, because Dropbox links are not fetched; a 2-hour video is ready in about 4 minutes. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.
Three ways out of Dropbox
Pick whichever gets the video onto your device fastest.
From the website
On dropbox.com, hover over the video, open the three-dot menu and choose Download. The file lands in your Downloads folder in its original format, usually MP4 or MOV, ready to drop into the box above.
From the synced folder
With the Dropbox desktop app, your files appear in a Dropbox folder on the computer. If the video shows a cloud icon, it is online-only: right-click it and make it available offline, wait for the download, then upload it from that folder.
From a link someone sent
A shared Dropbox link opens a preview page with a Download button, usually without needing an account. Download it and upload the file. If you keep a copy in Google Drive shared as 'Anyone with the link', that Drive link can be pasted here directly.
When the video is huge
Camera footage is heavy. A 5-hour workshop filmed at 3 Mbps is about 6.75 GB, over the 5 GB ceiling. Keeping just the sound brings it near 290 MB at 128 kbps, which uploads even before a pack; very large files go through the upload page.
Getting text from a long Dropbox video
Watching it through versus uploading it once.
✗ Watching the preview in Dropbox
Pausing and typing while a long video plays in the browser.
- Hours of viewing for a few quotes
- Preview playback that stalls on long files
- Notes with guessed timestamps
- Nothing to search afterwards
- Captions written by hand, if at all
- Sharing the whole video for one passage
✓ Downloading and uploading
The video goes in whole and comes back as text.
- One download, one upload
- About 4 minutes for two hours
- Timestamps on every line
- Chapters across the whole video
- SRT and VTT captions to publish
- 120 minutes from the $4 pack

FAQ
Questions about long videos in Dropbox.
Can I paste a Dropbox link instead of downloading?
No. A Dropbox link opens a preview page rather than the media file, and WhipScribe does not fetch Dropbox links. Download the video and upload it. Links that can be pasted are YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Kick, Google Drive and podcast feeds.
What if the video is over 2 GB?
Files between 2 and 5 GB start once a pack is on your account. Over 5 GB, export only the audio track; a long talk as 128 kbps audio is roughly 58 MB an hour.
How long does a long video take?
About 2 minutes per audio hour once uploaded. Two hours takes around 4 minutes and a 6-hour event around 12. On a slow connection the upload itself is usually the longer part, which is another reason to send only the audio.
What does a folder of long videos cost?
Add the running times. Ten 90-minute videos are 900 minutes and fit the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. A single 2-hour video is 120 minutes on the $4 pack of 300, after a free preview of the opening minutes.
Can I publish captions on the video afterwards?
Yes. SRT and VTT exports carry the video's timestamps, so they line up when you add them as captions. TXT, DOCX and JSON are there too.
Is the video kept private?
Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. Delete the video and its transcript from your Library at any time.
