How to · court reference

How do I transcribe a recording for court reference? A working copy, tied to the audio.

Upload a copy of the recording, keep the original file exactly as it is, and use the timestamped transcript as a working reference that points back to the moment in the audio: one file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, and it is transcribed at about 2 minutes per audio hour. A 3-hour hearing or meeting recording, 180 minutes, is ready in about 6 minutes, the opening minutes are a free preview, and it fits the $4 pack of 300 minutes.

Preparing a working reference

Steps that keep the transcript useful and the original safe.

Not a certified transcript

This is an AI transcript for working from: finding passages, preparing questions, drafting notes. It is not a certified or official transcript and nothing on this page is legal advice. Whether and how a recording can be relied on is for the court or your lawyer.

Protect the original

Upload a copy, never your only file, and do not edit, trim or convert the original. Note where it came from and when you received it. If a format conversion is needed for upload, convert a copy and keep both.

Cite back to the audio

Every line carries its timestamp, so a passage in your notes can point to 01:42:16 in the recording and anyone can play it back. Chapters break a long hearing into parts. Large files go through the upload page, up to 5 GB.

Check what matters

Read the passages you rely on with the audio playing. Names, figures and quiet or overlapping speech are where errors are most likely. Speakers are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, helped by names said aloud in the room.

Before and after

Hours of audio, or a reference you can cite.

✗ Working from memory

Without text, every reference to the recording is a guess at the minute and a paraphrase of the words.

  • Scrubbing hours of audio
  • Notes that paraphrase
  • No timestamps to cite
  • Hard to share one passage
  • Original edited by accident
  • Waiting days for typed copies

✓ A timestamped working copy

Text in minutes, each line tied to the audio, the original untouched.

  • 180 minutes in about 6 minutes
  • Timestamp on every line
  • Chapters through the hearing
  • Names, dates and figures listed
  • DOCX for your own notes
  • Original kept as received

Sample output

A working copy of a recorded hearing.

FAQ

Court reference transcripts, answered.

Can I submit this transcript to a court?

Rules about what may be filed or relied on differ by court and jurisdiction, so ask the court or your lawyer. This is a working transcript for preparation and reference.

What does a multi-day matter cost?

Four days of 5 hours each is 20 hours, 1,200 minutes, which fits the $18 pack of 3,000 minutes. A single 3-hour recording fits the $4 pack of 300 minutes. Packs are one-time, with no subscription, and credits never expire.

What recordings is this for?

Recordings you hold lawfully and may use: a copy of a hearing you were given, a recorded meeting, a voicemail or an interview. Recording a conversation needs the consent the law where you are requires; that is the recorder's responsibility.

The recording came in an unusual format.

Some court and police systems use their own players. If the player can export or save as MP3 or WAV, use that on a copy; otherwise ask whoever supplied it for a standard audio copy.

The file is over 2 GB or longer than 10 hours.

Files up to 5 GB upload with or without a pack. A recording longer than 10 hours has to be two files, split on a copy at a natural break.

Who can see the recording?

Only your account, unless you choose to share. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and you can delete a recording and its transcript from your Library at any time, for example once the matter is closed.
