Transcribe a 3-hour union meeting so every member can read what was decided.
A 3-hour union meeting is 180 minutes of reports, debate and votes, and it comes back as timestamped text in about 6 minutes; a phone or recorder file of that length is about 170 MB as an MP3, far below the 2 GB that uploads before a pack. The first 20 minutes are free, and a $6 pack of 500 minutes covers the meeting with at least 320 minutes left.
For branch secretaries and stewards
A long meeting on shift-friendly terms: members who missed it can read it.
Members who could not attend
Night shift, childcare, a second job: plenty of members miss the monthly meeting. A transcript with chapters lets them read the bargaining report or the strike-fund debate on their own time, and the brief gives them the decisions in a few lines.
Report-backs with the numbers
Bargaining updates are full of figures: the wage offer, the pension contribution, the date the ballot closes. The brief lists the names, numbers and dates that were said, each with a timestamp, so the newsletter quotes the offer exactly as the negotiator gave it.
However the meeting was recorded
A phone on the top table, a recorder, a hybrid Zoom or Teams call, or a livestream on YouTube for members at other sites. Upload the file, or paste the YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link; processing then takes about 2 minutes per audio hour.
Agenda and floor debate as chapters
Chapters follow the meeting: officers' reports, correspondence, the motion, speakers for and against, the vote. The chair and the members who spoke are named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, so the record of the debate is easy to check.
The record problem
Decisions made in a three-hour meeting reach the membership as a rumour.
✗ Notes and word of mouth
The secretary takes notes while chairing half the agenda, and the details drift by the next shift.
- Figures repeated wrongly on the floor
- Motions remembered differently
- Absent members told second-hand
- Hours to relisten for one answer
- Minutes typed weeks later
- Arguments about what the offer was
✓ A record anyone can read
The meeting comes back as text with chapters, figures and timestamps the same night.
- Roughly 6 minutes of processing
- Offer figures listed in the brief
- Chapters for each item and the vote
- Speakers named in the summary
- DOCX for the minutes, TXT for the noticeboard
- Most of the $6 pack still unused

FAQ
Three-hour union meetings: questions branch officers ask.
How long does a 3-hour union meeting take to transcribe?
About 6 minutes from the moment the file is in, at roughly 2 minutes per hour of audio. A pasted link adds the time to fetch the recording.
What does a year of meetings cost?
One meeting is 180 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. A quarter of monthly three-hour meetings is 540 minutes and fits the $12 pack of 2,000. A full year of twelve is 2,160 minutes and fits the $24 pack of 5,000 with 2,840 left for committee and bargaining meetings.
Do we need members' consent to record?
Tell the meeting at the start that it is being recorded and why, and follow your own rules on recording. This page does not give legal advice on recording meetings.
Some members speak in another language. Does that work?
99 languages are detected automatically. A meeting held mainly in one language with some contributions in another is detected on its main language, so check the passages in the second language before quoting them.
The meeting ran for most of a day. Is there a length limit?
One file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, whichever comes first. A conference or delegate day that ran longer than 10 hours needs to go up as two files; before the first pack, files up to 2 GB upload.
Who can see the recording?
The recording is transcribed on servers we run ourselves and is never used for training. The branch can delete the file and transcript whenever it decides.
