Transcribe a Hebrew shiur given at a synagogue or yeshiva in the US.
A shiur at a US synagogue or yeshiva usually runs 1 to 2 hours, and a 90-minute recording comes back as text in about 3 minutes, with Hebrew detected automatically and the first 20 minutes free. The rest of a 90-minute shiur takes 90 of the 500 minutes in the $6 pack, so five shiurim fit with 50 minutes left.
For rabbis, talmidim and shiur archives
A shiur you can search by source, not by scrubbing back through the audio.
Hebrew and English in one shiur
Many shiurim in the US move between Hebrew and English sentence by sentence, reading the text in one and explaining in the other. The recording is detected on its main language and the switches are handled, so both halves of the explanation stay in the transcript.
Chapters by sugya
A shiur that covers a mishnah, a Gemara passage and two commentators comes back with a chapter for each stretch and its start time. A talmid reviewing before the next shiur jumps to the passage instead of listening from the top.
Terms and quoted texts
Hebrew terms inside an English sentence may come back in Latin letters or in Hebrew script, and Aramaic quoted from the page is the part most worth checking against the text. A find-and-replace pass makes the spelling consistent for a printed handout.
From the recorder or the archive
Upload the file from a phone or a shiur recorder through the upload page, or paste a YouTube, Vimeo or Google Drive link if the shiur is already posted there. Audio of a 2-hour shiur is small enough to go in before any pack. Shiurim streamed on a video platform are often longer than the audio suggests, because of the time before and after; the chapters show where the learning starts.
Why shiur recordings are hard to use
Hundreds of hours of shiurim, and finding one explanation means listening again.
✗ An audio-only shiur archive
A shul or yeshiva may record every shiur for years. When a talmid wants the explanation of one line, the only index is the date and the masechta, and the rest is listening. Typing a shiur by hand is slow work, and in practice it is done for a handful of shiurim a year, not for every one.
- No way to search the spoken Torah
- Tools that refuse mixed languages
- English explanation dropped from Hebrew text
- Shiurim over an hour rejected
- Handouts typed out by hand
- Sources mentioned but never noted
✓ Shiurim as text
Every shiur becomes a document with chapters, a brief of the main points and a list of the sources and figures cited. Over a zman it becomes a written companion to the learning. A maggid shiur who publishes notes can start from the transcript and edit, instead of reconstructing a shiur from memory.
- About 3 minutes for a 90-minute shiur
- Hebrew and English kept together
- Chapters for each passage learned
- Maggid shiur named in the summary
- Chat that finds a question discussed
- DOCX for a printed handout

FAQ
Shiur recordings, the common questions.
How long does a 90-minute shiur take to transcribe?
About 3 minutes. An hour-long shiur takes about 2, and a 2-hour Sunday morning shiur about 4.
What does a year of a weekly shiur cost?
Fifty-two shiurim of 75 minutes come to 3,900 minutes, which fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes with 1,100 left. A daily hour-long shiur, five days a week, uses 300 minutes a week, so the $12 pack of 2,000 covers six weeks. Prices are in US dollars, charged once.
Is the Hebrew written in Hebrew letters?
Hebrew speech is transcribed in Hebrew script, and English in Latin letters. A recording that switches language is detected on its main language and the switches are handled; Yiddish is among the 99 languages too.
How large can a shiur recording be?
Each shiur file can run to 10 hours or 5 GB. Uploads up to 2 GB go in before the first pack, which covers any audio recording of a shiur and most videos. If the upload refuses a video of the shiur, convert it to MP3 first.
Should a series of shiurim be one file or many?
One file per shiur works best, so each gets its own chapters and brief. Join files only when a single shiur was recorded in parts. Each file is processed at about 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a week of separate shiurim is done long before the next one begins.
Which formats come back, and is the shiur audio private?
TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, for handouts, captions and archives. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training, and an archive can be removed from the account whenever its owner chooses.
