Over an hour · journalism, oral history, HR · about 2 min per hour

Transcribe long interview recordings and check every quote against the clock.

A long interview, whether a reporter's sit-down, an oral history session or an HR conversation, is transcribed at about 2 minutes per audio hour, so two hours come back in roughly 4 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free, and a two-hour interview uses 120 of the 500 minutes in a $6 pack. Interviews like these usually live on a phone or a handheld recorder, and the page covers that file from upload to quote check.

For the people who quote what was said

Hours of conversation, with every sentence pinned to the second it was spoken.

Quotes you can verify

A quote that goes into print, an archive or a file should match the tape. Every line carries its timestamp, so you can jump to that moment and listen before you use the words.

Oral history sessions

Oral history interviews often run two or three hours on a handheld recorder, sometimes across several sittings. Each session comes back with chapters at its turns, and the names, places and dates said are listed beside the transcript.

On deadline

At about 2 minutes per audio hour, a 90-minute interview uploaded at 4:00 is readable by about 4:03. The transcript waits in your Library if you step away to write the lede.

Workplace interviews

Long workplace interviews need a record people can check. Six 90-minute interviews are 540 minutes, just over the $6 pack, so they belong on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, with room for follow-ups.

Why long interviews go untranscribed

The recording is the record, until someone has to find one sentence in it.

✗ Working from the audio

Without a transcript, every quote check means scrubbing through hours of tape.

  • Scrubbing for a quote you half remember
  • Typing three hours of tape by hand
  • Interviews cut to fit a 25 MB API limit
  • Names and dates misheard and never checked
  • Notes that miss what was said off-script
  • A subscription for a project that ends

✓ Working from the text

Search the transcript, then confirm against the audio at the timestamp.

  • Two minutes or so per recorded hour
  • Timestamps on every line
  • Names, places and dates listed
  • Interviewer and subject named in the quotes
  • DOCX for the archive or the story file
  • Minutes that stay on the account

An oral history session, past the two-hour mark.

This sample is illustrative, written for this page, and not from any real interview or archive. Timestamps place the lines in a long session.

00:02:15 For the recording, could you say where you grew up and the years you lived there?
00:37:50 We moved in the winter of sixty-eight. My father had the job at the mill lined up before we even packed.
01:29:30 You said the union vote split the street. Which side were your neighbors on?
02:04:10 Both sides, depending on the week. That was the thing nobody writes down.

FAQ

Long interviews, the questions people ask.

How soon is a two-hour interview ready?

About 4 minutes. A three-hour oral history session takes about 6, and you can close the tab while it runs.

What does a run of interviews cost?

Add the minutes. Six interviews of 90 minutes are 540 minutes on the $12 pack of 2,000, and twenty of them come to 1,800, still inside that pack. The first 20 minutes of your first recording are free, and prices are in US dollars.

Is an HR interview kept private?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. You can delete a recording and its transcript whenever your policy requires, and nothing is shared from your account.

Will a long WAV from a field recorder upload?

A single upload may run to 10 hours or 5 GB. Before the first pack the limit is 2 GB per upload, and a larger file starts once a pack is on the account. A three-hour stereo WAV at CD quality is close to 2 GB, so an MP3 export avoids the question.

An oral history ran across several sittings. One file or several?

Send each sitting as its own file, which keeps the chapters and timestamps tidy. A single file can run up to 10 hours, so a long sitting rarely needs splitting.

Which languages and which exports?

99 languages are detected automatically, including Spanish, Korean, Japanese and Hebrew. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON from the same run.
