Transcribe a long AMR-WB (.awb) file wideband voice, start to finish.
A two-and-a-half-hour AWB recording is 150 minutes: it transcribes in about 5 minutes and fits the $6 pack (500 minutes), with the first 20 minutes free. AMR-WB is wideband phone voice at roughly 5.7 to 10.7 MB an hour, so size is never the problem; if the upload refuses the .awb, convert it to MP3 first.
AMR-WB in brief
Wideband voice was made for HD calls. On a phone it also became the format for long recordings.
Where .awb files come from
AMR-WB, saved as .awb or inside a 3GP container, is the wideband version of the codec mobile networks use for voice. Some phone call recorders, voice-memo apps and field recorders save in it, so an interview or a meeting recorded on a phone can arrive as a long .awb file.
Size by bitrate
AMR-WB samples at 16 kHz and runs between 6.6 and 23.85 kbps. At the common 12.65 kbps an hour is about 5.7 MB; at the top rate about 10.7 MB. Ten hours never passes roughly 110 MB, so the 10-hour line per file is the only limit you will meet.
Uploading or converting
Try the file on the upload page. If the upload refuses it, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC; ffmpeg -i interview.awb interview.mp3 works in most builds. A 3GP file with AMR-WB inside behaves the same way.
Clearer than narrowband
Wideband keeps the upper voice frequencies that phone-quality AMR cuts off, so consonants and names come through better in the transcript. It is still a voice codec: music and background sound are not transcribed, the speech is.
Phone recordings, the slow route
An interview recorded on a phone is easy to capture and hard to use.
✗ Stuck on the handset
Sharing apps compress again, and many desktop tools do not know the extension.
- An .awb file the laptop cannot play
- Messaging apps that cap file length
- Interviews re-recorded off a speaker
- Hours replayed to find one answer
- Quotes typed out by hand
- A project spread over dozens of memos
✓ One upload per recording
Send the file or a quick MP3 of it; the transcript comes back whole.
- Two and a half hours in about 5 minutes
- Chapters by topic
- Quotes pulled out with timestamps
- Names and dates listed
- A chat to find what was said
- Minutes kept across the project

FAQ
Long AWB recordings: the usual questions
Will the upload accept an .awb file?
Often it will, since AMR-WB is a common voice codec. If the upload refuses it, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC and upload that; the words come out the same.
How long does it take?
About 2 minutes per audio hour: a 2.5-hour interview is ready in about 5 minutes, and a 10-hour file in about 20.
What does a research project cost?
Twenty interviews of 90 minutes each are 30 hours, or 1,800 minutes, which the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) covers with 200 left. A single long interview of 2.5 hours is 150 minutes on the $6 pack.
Are the speakers kept apart?
Speakers are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters, which is where an interviewer and a narrator usually need to be told apart.
What about phone calls?
A call recorded as AMR-WB transcribes like any other file. Recording a call needs the consent the law where you are requires; no bot joins a live call, this works on the recording afterwards.
Which languages and exports, and is the audio private?
99 languages are detected automatically, and a recording that switches language is handled on its main language. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
