Transcribe a long GoPro LRV file the small file that carries the voice.
A three-hour GoPro session is 180 minutes of audio: it transcribes in about 6 minutes and fits the $4 pack (300 minutes), and the opening minutes are a free preview. The LRV file the camera writes next to each video is a low-resolution MP4, usually a fraction of the main file's size, so renaming it to .mp4 is often all a long session needs before it uploads.
LRV, the proxy
The camera already made a light copy of every clip. For a transcript, it is often all you need.
Why GoPro writes LRV
Alongside each full-resolution MP4, GoPro cameras save a low-resolution video, the LRV, for previewing on the phone app. It usually carries the soundtrack as well. People who leave a GoPro running through a talk, a class or a ride end up with hours of both.
How much smaller
The main GoPro video can run at tens of megabits a second, many gigabytes an hour. The LRV is a small low-bitrate copy, commonly well under a gigabyte an hour depending on model and settings. That often brings a long session inside the 5 GB line, and sometimes inside the 500 MB box on this page.
Rename, or convert
An LRV is usually an MP4 with a different extension: rename it from .LRV to .MP4 and it plays and uploads like any video. If the upload refuses it, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC, or extract only the sound, then send it from the upload page.
Chapters from the camera
GoPro cameras split long recordings into several chapter files, each with its own LRV. Join the parts in order with ffmpeg so the session comes back as one transcript with one clock, keeping the total under 10 hours.
Action-camera recordings
A GoPro left running records everything. Getting the words out of it is the slow part.
✗ Gigabytes of 4K
The main files are huge, split into pieces, and heavy to move.
- Full-size chapters of several gigabytes each
- Uploads that stop partway
- A session split into many pieces
- Rewatching to find one explanation
- Hand-typed captions
- Notes that drift from the timeline
✓ The proxy does the job
A renamed LRV, or its audio, is enough for a full transcript.
- Three hours in about 6 minutes
- Chapters with timestamps
- Captions for the full edit
- Names and numbers listed
- A chat to search the session
- Credits that wait for the next shoot

FAQ
Long GoPro LRV files: answers
Does the LRV have the full audio?
It usually carries the same soundtrack as the main video, at a lower video quality. Play it back before uploading a long session to be sure; if it has no sound, extract the audio from the main MP4 instead.
Will the upload take an LRV file?
Rename it to .mp4 first. If the upload still refuses it, convert to MP3 or MP4 with ffmpeg or VLC. The box on this page takes files up to 500 MB, and a larger one continues on the main upload page, up to 5 GB.
How long does three hours take?
About 6 minutes after the upload, at about 2 minutes per audio hour. A 9.31-hour public run finished in 1,033 seconds.
What does a season of sessions cost?
Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. A single 3-hour session is 180 minutes on the $4 pack.
The main video is over 2 GB. Does that matter?
Only if you upload the main video. Before the first pack, uploads go up to 5 GB; a larger file can be split or have its audio exported. The LRV or the extracted audio usually avoids the question.
Languages, exports and privacy?
99 languages, detected automatically. Wind and engine noise are not transcribed; speech is. Exports are TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON, and recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
