MPG / MPEG · lecture DVDs · one disc per upload

Transcribe a long MPG file ripped from the lecture DVD.

A long MPG ripped from a lecture DVD transcribes as one file per disc: a 2-hour lecture of about 4 GB comes back in about 4 minutes. Each file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, a rip over 2 GB starts once a pack is on the account, and the first 20 minutes are free.

Courses that shipped on disc

The lecture series on a stack of DVDs, turned into course notes.

What a rip gives you

Lecture courses, conference sets and training series were sold and archived on DVD for years. Ripping a disc produces an MPEG-2 file, often named .mpg or .mpeg, or the disc's own VOB files, which hold the same kind of video.

Two gigabytes an hour, roughly

DVD video runs at about 4 to 8 Mbps, so a rip is near 2 to 3.5 GB per hour; an older MPEG-1 file from a video CD is closer to 600 MB per hour. A two-hour disc usually sits between the 2 GB line, where a pack is needed first, and the 5 GB ceiling.

Too big, or refused

If a rip is over 5 GB, export only the audio as MP3, which takes a two-hour lecture down to well under 100 MB. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first as well. VOB files can be renamed or joined into one MPG before you start.

A course you can search

Each disc returns with chapters, timestamps, the definitions, names and dates the lecturer gave, and a chat that answers questions such as which lecture covered a topic. The lecturer and anyone asking questions are named in the summary and key quotes.

Before / after

A lecture series on DVD is hard to study from.

✗ Locked on the disc

DVD courses are long and linear, and the only search is the menu.

  • A disc drive needed just to play it
  • Rips refused for being over the size limit
  • Ten hours of lectures with no index
  • Notes typed while pausing every minute
  • VOB pieces that need joining first
  • Pricing per file or per month for a one-time job

✓ Disc by disc, then the course

Upload one MPG per disc and build a searchable set of notes.

  • Each disc as one upload, under 10 hours and 5 GB
  • Two hours back in about 4 minutes
  • Chapters per topic with timestamps
  • The lecturer named in the brief, quotes and chapters
  • A 10-hour course takes 600 minutes of a $12 pack
  • DOCX for notes, SRT for captioning the video

00:01:58 This is lecture seven of twelve. Last time we stopped at the treaty, so tonight is everything that came after it.
00:44:13 Write this date down, because it shows up again in lecture ten. Everything in the second half depends on it.
01:21:36 Was the trade route closed completely, or just taxed so heavily that nobody used it?
01:56:02 Taxed, not closed, and that difference is the subject of next week. Thank you.

FAQ

Long MPG and MPEG questions.

How long does a 2-hour MPG take to transcribe?

Roughly 4 minutes once it is uploaded, since each audio hour takes about 2 minutes. A 4 GB rip takes longer to upload than to process on most connections.

What does a 10-hour DVD course cost?

Ten hours is 600 minutes, which goes on the $12 pack (2,000 minutes) and leaves 1,400 for later. A single 2-hour disc is 120 minutes and fits in the $6 pack of 500 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free on a first recording.

Why is my 3 GB MPG waiting?

Before the first pack, uploads go up to 2 GB. A larger rip starts once a pack is on the account, or you can export the audio to MP3 and send a much smaller file straight away.

Can a whole course go up as one file?

Only if its audio is under 10 hours and 5 GB. Ripped video of ten hours would be far over 5 GB, so upload one MPG per disc, or join the audio of all discs into one file if it stays within 10 hours.

What languages can the lectures be in?

99 languages, detected automatically, so a course in Portuguese, Korean or Afrikaans needs no setting.

Which exports come with it, and where is it processed?

Each disc downloads as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON. Lectures are transcribed on our own servers and never used to train a model.
