OGV · 450 to 900 MB per hour · up to 10 h or 5 GB

Transcribe a long OGV file screen captures with a voice.

A long OGV file, Ogg video from open-source recorders and screen capture tools, runs about 450 MB per hour at 1 Mbps and about 900 MB per hour at 2 Mbps, so at the higher rate the 5 GB limit arrives near 5.5 hours. It transcribes at about 2 minutes per audio hour; the first 20 minutes are free and a 6-hour coding session fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

OGV, worked out

An hour of screen and voice, in a format the open-source tools chose.

Where OGV files come from

OGV is the Ogg container with Theora video and, usually, Vorbis audio. Linux screen recorders such as recordMyDesktop write it, and open-source projects used it for talks and tutorials because it carried no licence fees. Long ones are often coding sessions, software walkthroughs and recorded workshops.

Size per hour

At 1 Mbps an hour is 1,000,000 bits a second times 3,600 seconds, divided by 8: 450 MB. At 2 Mbps it is 900 MB, so 2 GB arrives near 2.2 hours and 5 GB near 5.5. A capture past 2 GB waits for a pack on the account before it begins.

The audio-only route

Only the voice is transcribed, so the picture can stay behind. Copy the Vorbis track out as an .ogg with ffmpeg, about 30 to 60 MB an hour, or, if the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first. Either goes onto the upload page far faster than the video.

A walkthrough you can follow

A long session comes back with a brief, chapters at each step, the commands, version numbers, names and dates spoken, and a chat that finds where a setting was explained. The presenter and anyone else on the recording are identified and named in the summary, key quotes and chapters.

Why long OGV files are awkward

Screen captures grow fast, and many tools never expected Ogg video at all.

✗ A big file in a rare format

Many players and upload forms skip .ogv, and a long capture soon passes the caps that tools set.

  • Pickers that do not list .ogv
  • Hours of screen pixels uploaded for the voice
  • Size caps reached in the first hour
  • A tutorial split into many parts
  • Steps impossible to find again
  • No notes from a whole workshop

✓ The session, in text

Send the OGV or its audio and read the walkthrough step by step.

  • Up to 10 hours or 5 GB an upload
  • About 2 minutes for each hour of speech
  • First 20 minutes of the session free
  • 500 minutes for $6, kept until used
  • A chapter for every step
  • JSON with timings for your own tools

Sample

A recorded coding session, four hours in.

Illustrative: a session invented for this page, not a real stream. The timestamps show where each step falls in a long OGV capture.

00:05:02 I have a clean virtual machine here. We install the dependencies first, then build from source so you can see every warning.
01:47:33 That error is the old library version. Remove the package, pin the newer one in the config file, and run the build again.
02:15:10 Someone in the chat asks whether this works on the older release. Do you know?
02:15:41 It should, but I have not tested it. I will try it at the end and leave a note in the repository.

FAQ

Long OGV files, the common questions.

How long does a long OGV take to transcribe?

Close to 2 minutes per hour of audio, so a 6-hour session takes about 12 minutes once uploaded. A screen capture of several gigabytes spends far longer uploading; the audio-only route avoids that.

What does a series of recorded sessions cost?

A 6-hour coding session is 360 minutes on the $6 pack of 500. A workshop series of fifteen 2-hour sessions is 1,800 minutes on the $12 pack of 2,000.

How big is an OGV file per hour?

About 450 MB at 1 Mbps and 900 MB at 2 Mbps. Screen captures vary with what is on screen: a still terminal compresses well, scrolling and video in the capture raise the bitrate.

My capture is over 5 GB or longer than 10 hours. What then?

Copy out only the audio, which turns ten hours into a few hundred MB. If the session itself runs past 10 hours, split it into two files at a break and upload each.

Which languages can be spoken in the capture?

99 are detected automatically, Portuguese, Korean and Swedish among them. Code read aloud comes back as spoken, so check exact commands against the screen.

Which downloads are there, and where does the capture go?

Five: TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and timed JSON. Screen captures are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
