Transcribe a long MKV screen recording every step you narrated.
A five-hour MKV screen recording is 300 minutes, which the $6 pack (500 minutes) covers with 200 left, and it is transcribed in about ten minutes. The file can be up to 10 hours or 5 GB, but at a 6,000 kbps video bitrate 5 GB is under two hours of screen, so send an audio copy when it is bigger; the first 20 minutes are free.
OBS screen captures
A long screen recording is mostly pixels around a voice.
Bitrate sets the size
OBS writes video at the bitrate you set. At 6,000 kbps an hour of screen is about 2.7 GB, and at 2,500 kbps it is closer to 1.1 GB. Quality-based modes vary with the content, and a mostly still screen of slides or code usually comes out smaller than gameplay.
Long silences cost minutes
A screen session has stretches of typing, compiling or waiting where nothing is said. Silence counts toward the running time like speech, so trimming dead hours before upload saves credits on a very long session.
When the upload refuses MKV
Some file pickers do not list .mkv. OBS can rewrap a recording as MP4 without re-encoding from its Remux Recordings option, and bigger results continue on the upload page. If the upload refuses the file, convert it to MP3 first.
Find the step you explained
Chapters with timestamps divide a five-hour session by topic, and the chat answers questions such as where the deployment step was shown. The SRT export turns your narration into captions for the tutorial itself.
Screen captures elsewhere
What usually happens to a five-hour screen recording.
✗ Too heavy, too plain
The video is gigabytes of pixels around a narration that would fit in a few hundred megabytes, so size limits hit first.
- An upload refused before the first hour ends
- MKV missing from the accepted list
- Captions typed by hand from scratch
- Steps buried in hours of footage
- A transcript with no way to search it
- One session split into many short videos
✓ Narration first
The voice is what gets read, and the timestamps line up with the video you already have.
- Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per file
- Remux or MP3 when MKV is refused
- Silence trimmed to save minutes
- Chapters by topic, with times
- SRT and VTT for the tutorial
- Credits that never expire

FAQ
Long screen recordings, answered.
How long does a five-hour screen recording take?
About ten minutes after the file or its audio copy has uploaded. Sending several gigabytes of MKV is the slow part, and an audio-only copy of five hours at 128 kbps is about 290 MB.
What does a long screen recording cost?
Five hours is 300 minutes on the $6 pack (500 minutes), with 200 left. A course of ten five-hour sessions is 3,000 minutes, which fits the $24 pack (5,000 minutes) with 2,000 to spare.
My MKV is larger than 5 GB. What now?
Export just the audio, which shrinks the file to a few hundred megabytes, or lower the video bitrate for future sessions. Rewrapping as MP4 keeps the same streams, so it does not help with size. Above 2 GB, a file starts once a pack is on the account.
The session ran longer than 10 hours. What now?
Split it into two files at a break, ideally where you paused or changed topic. Each transcript starts at zero, so times in the second one are offset by the first part's length.
Should I cut out the silent stretches?
If a session has hours where nothing is said, trimming them saves minutes, because billing follows running time. If you need the transcript times to match the original video exactly, keep the file whole instead.
Which languages and exports, and is the recording kept private?
99 languages are detected automatically, and the exports cover TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT and JSON. Screen recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
