Amazon S3 · copy down, then upload · 5 hours in about 10 min

Transcribe long recordings stored in Amazon S3 from the bucket to a brief in two steps.

To transcribe a long recording in Amazon S3, download the object from the S3 console or copy it with the AWS CLI, then upload the file here; a 5-hour session becomes text in about 10 minutes. Those 300 minutes sit inside the $6 pack of 500 minutes, and a bucket of 25 two-hour sessions, 3,000 minutes, fits the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes.

Buckets full of sessions

The event ended. The recordings went to S3. Nobody has read a word of them.

Two ways to get the file

In the S3 console, select the object and use its download action. From a terminal, aws s3 cp s3://your-bucket/path/session.mp4 . copies one object, and aws s3 sync copies a whole prefix. Either way you end up with a local file to upload.

Objects in an archive tier

If the recordings were moved to a Glacier storage class, they have to be restored before S3 lets you download them, and that restore can take hours. Start it the day before you plan to transcribe, then copy the restored objects down.

Why a presigned URL will not do

A presigned or public S3 URL is not one of the links WhipScribe fetches; we take YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Kick, Google Drive and podcast feeds. Upload the downloaded copy: up to 500 MB in the box above, anything larger on the upload page.

Pricing the bucket

Twenty-five sessions of two hours each make 3,000 minutes. The $24 pack of 5,000 minutes covers them and leaves 2,000 minutes, roughly another sixteen sessions, for the next event. Credits do not expire between conferences.

What an untouched bucket costs you

Storage is paid every month. The talks inside earn nothing.

✗ Recordings as objects

Keys and prefixes, no idea which talk said what you need.

  • Object keys instead of titles
  • Restore delays you forgot to plan for
  • Upload boxes built for short clips
  • A pipeline to build before anything is read
  • Speakers you identify by ear
  • No captions for the published videos

✓ Recordings as text

Copy down, upload, and keep a transcript beside each key.

  • Five hours turned around in about 10 minutes
  • Up to 5 GB per object
  • 3,000 minutes covered by one $24 pack
  • SRT and VTT for the session videos
  • JSON to store next to the object
  • A brief at the top of every file

FAQ

Amazon S3 recordings, practical answers.

Is there an S3 integration or a bucket connector?

No. WhipScribe has no connection to AWS and never asks for keys. You download the objects with your own access and upload the files.

How long will a 5-hour session take?

About 10 minutes once uploaded, at around 2 minutes per hour of audio. Copying a large object down from S3 can take longer than the transcription itself.

What does a whole event cost?

Count the minutes. Twenty-five two-hour sessions, 3,000 minutes, fit the $24 pack of 5,000 minutes. A smaller event of 1,200 minutes fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free for a first-time visitor.

Some objects are 4 GB videos. Will they upload?

Yes, after a pack is on the account; before it, uploads stop at 2 GB. Each file can be up to 5 GB or 10 hours. A larger video can have its audio extracted first, which makes it a fraction of the size.

What languages do the sessions need to be in?

Any of 99 languages, detected automatically, with no setting to choose. A talk that switches language partway is detected on its main language.

Where does the uploaded copy end up?

It is transcribed on our own servers and never used for training. The original stays in your bucket, and you can delete the uploaded copy and transcript from your Library.
