Stone, echo and a sound desk

A cathedral is built to carry sound for seconds. That is lovely for a choir and hard for a microphone at the back.

Record from the desk, not the nave

The reverberation that makes the building beautiful blurs speech on a phone in the pews. If the cathedral has a PA system, take the feed from its desk into a recorder or laptop: the voices from the pulpit and lectern arrive close and clean. A streamed service on YouTube can be pasted as a link, live replays included.

Choir and organ are left out

Anthems, hymns, psalms that are sung and the organ voluntary are music, and music is not transcribed. The sermon, the readings, the prayers that are spoken, the notices and a lecture's question time come back. A concert returns only its spoken introductions.

Lecture series and talks

Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. Each lecture returns chapters with timestamps and the questions it answers.

A year of services, costed

Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire. Files up to 500 MB go in the box above; longer recordings continue on the upload page, up to 10 hours or 5 GB each.

Why the spoken word gets lost

The service was streamed and archived. The sermon the dean wants for the magazine is still at minute 37 of a video.

FAQ

Cathedral recordings: common questions.

How long does a service take to transcribe?

About 2 minutes per audio hour, so an 80-minute service comes back in under 3 minutes and a three-hour festival service in about 6.

What will a year of services cost?

Fifty-two services of 80 minutes, 4,160 minutes, fit the $32 pack of 6,000 minutes. Packs start at $4 for 300 minutes, and credits never expire.

Will the choir and hymns appear?

No. Singing and organ music are not transcribed. The spoken parts of the service come back, so a choral evensong will produce far less text than a sermon.

The echo is strong on our phone recordings. Will they work?

Speech that you can follow when listening usually comes through, but a phone far from the pulpit loses words in the echo. The sound desk feed, or a phone placed near a loudspeaker, gives better results.

Can we paste the link to our streamed service?

Yes. YouTube links work, live replays included, as do Vimeo links. Stream replays over 6 hours start once a pack is on the account.

Where is the recording processed?

Recordings are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training. You can delete the file and transcript once the text is saved.
