For a long Final Cut Pro interview, share the project as Audio Only or as a small H.264 file and upload that here. A 2.5-hour interview comes back in about 5 minutes, the first 20 minutes are free, and twelve 2-hour interviews (1,440 minutes) fit the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes.

Share, then upload

Final Cut Pro keeps the interview in its library. Share one file out and the text follows.

Audio Only from the Share menu

Choose File, Share, Export File, then set the format to Audio Only in the settings and pick WAV, AAC or MP3. The file is saved wherever you point the save dialog, and a 2-hour interview as 128 kbps AAC is about 115 MB, so it uploads in moments. Choosing WAV makes a larger file, about 691 MB an hour at 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo, and it transcribes no better than AAC.

Why the default share is huge

When the video codec is Apple ProRes, the file is enormous: at 100 Mbps, one hour is 100 times 3,600 seconds divided by 8, or 45 GB. That is far past 5 GB. Switching the codec to H.264 or sharing Audio Only brings it back within reach.

Interviews for a documentary

Each interview comes back with its quotes, the names and dates mentioned, and chapters with timestamps, so selects can be marked before you return to the timeline. The interviewee is named in the summary and the key quotes.

A shoot's worth of interviews

Twelve interviews of two hours each come to 1,440 minutes. That fits the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes with 560 minutes left for pickups. A single 2.5-hour interview is 150 minutes on the $6 pack.

Interview projects elsewhere

The interview is cut, but the words are still locked inside the library.

✗ What holds an interview back

A long interview takes longer to get into text than to record.

  • ProRes shares too big to send anywhere
  • The Whisper API capped at 25 MB per upload
  • Interviews split into short clips first
  • Paper selects written while scrubbing
  • Timecodes copied by eye
  • One interviewee transcribed per day

✓ The Final Cut path

Share one file out, upload it, read the whole interview.

  • Audio Only in WAV, AAC or MP3
  • Close to 5 minutes for a 2.5-hour sit-down
  • Files as long as 10 hours
  • Quotes with timestamps for selects
  • The interview's first 20 minutes on us
  • $12 for a 12-interview shoot

FAQ

Final Cut Pro interviews: questions people ask.

How quickly does a 2.5-hour interview come back?

In about 5 minutes; processing runs near 2 minutes per hour of audio. The proof page records a 2.48-hour file completed in 200 seconds, close to that length.

What does a whole shoot of interviews cost?

The first 20 minutes of your first interview are free. Twelve 2-hour interviews (1,440 minutes) sit on the $12 pack of 2,000 minutes, about $0.36 an audio hour. A single 2.5-hour interview fits the $6 pack of 500 minutes.

How big may the shared file be, and should I split it?

A shared interview may be up to 10 hours or 5 GB; before the first pack is bought, the upload ceiling is 2 GB. There is no need to split an interview under 10 hours, and one file keeps every quote on one timeline.

Is there a Final Cut Pro extension for this?

No. WhipScribe has no integration with Final Cut Pro and nothing runs inside it; it transcribes the file you share out afterwards. A cut already published on Vimeo or YouTube can be pasted as a link.

My interviewee speaks Spanish, not English. Does that matter?

No. The language is detected automatically across 99 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean, with nothing to set.

Which formats come back, and is the interview kept private?

Each interview can be saved as TXT, DOCX, SRT, VTT or JSON for the edit. Interviews shared out of Final Cut are transcribed on our own servers and are never used for training.
